Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of Japan covers all the herpetologically significant islands of the Japanese archipelago.Written for both amateur and professional herpetologists, it lists and describes all known species, giving the currently accepted scientific name, Japanese name, meaning of Japanese name, description for identification, range, and ways of distinguishing similar species. All but 9of the 147 species are illustrated with color photographs suitable for identification, and range maps for all species are included. The annotated bibliography includes the few treatises in English and the major books in Japanese containing understandable illustrations. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide, but could be better.
This book is the only comprehensive English-language guide to the amphibian and reptile fauna of Japan published since 1907.The introduction is brief but interesting and discusses amphibian and reptile communities in historic and modern Japan, focusing on the dramatic and alarming changes which have recently occurred.

English and Japanese common names, identification, confusing species, distribution and range map, reproduction, and habits are covered for each species and subspecies (subspecies receive coverage independent of one another).Additional notes are given for many species. The habits and notes sections are particularly nice in this book, with threatened species usually having status addressed.Range maps are blobbed in, not locality dots.Voice is described for frog species.

One photograph of each but nine species/subspecies is lodged with each respective account. It would probably have been more useful for comparative ID purposes to provide photograph plates, and would have resulted in higher photo print quality.Although the frog pictures are excellent and the salamander pictures are of high quality, many of the reptile photographs are not so great. The publisher's description claims all photos are suitable for ID, but this is not true. The angles and lighting of many reptile photographs are not conducive to discerning important characters on many species.A few lizard and snake photographs are completely unrecognizable at the species level.

The single page bibliography lists nine major English- and Japanese-language works on the amphibian and reptile species in this region, but no other publications receive credit. No citations are used anywhere in the book. This makes sourcing the information (including human use, current status, and range) for each species impossible.

Although this is a strong guide book, it is overpriced for the content. One star was subtracted because of the many poor quality reptile photographs and the absence of much-needed citations. It does belong on the shelf of those with an interest in amphibian and reptile species of Japan since no other recent English-language work exists.

1-0 out of 5 stars not a great book - not sure why it got good reviews by others
I havepurchased other amphibian books that have far more pictures and maps. This has no maps of the area, so one would expect that all amphibians and reptiles in the book are found everywhere in the area.I know that is not true from other reptile books."A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of the Maya World: The Lowlands of Mexico, Northern Guatemala, and Belize" by Julian C. Lee is far superior and we've been able to identify every species we have seen. The maps are better in Lee's book and the images are larger and more clear.I can't see why this book recieved 4.5 starts as it is basically useless for identification.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paradise
A good book for a very small area. Excellent colour photographs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, and interesting
This is a great book focusing on northern Guatemala, southern Yucatan and Belize. It has great pictures, and some excellent text on identifing characteristics, with a key in the back. I will be using it in the Carmendel Playa and Merida areas, and will let you know how I feel about it afterthe trip.

The area map is not the best, but that is a minor problem.Youought to have a map of your own anyway. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What do you call a group of Alligators?
This is the best of the What do you call a group of (series) by Emma Nathan. With large pictures of each animal, and some facts you might not otherwise know about these animals. My only regret is that each book lists only ten animals. Both I and my unckle are interested in collective nouns. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful
Very informative book, covering an extensive range of animals. Descriptions have plenty of detail. Not just visual ID book, but a reference book on what makes them tick.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard by which all others should be judged
This book is the yardstick that all other field guides should be measured against. Detailed and concise, Hammerson gives an excellent account of Colorado herpetofauna. I have two copies, one for my car and one for home.

5-0 out of 5 stars ANatural History Treasure!
For those only mildly interested in snakes, lizards, frogs and other 'creeping things', this book will change your life's direction forever! The first edition of this book was a treat: a field guide to the herpetofaunaof Colorado, complete with photos, descriptions and distribution maps. Iwas highly pleased with it, and looking forward to the release of thesecond edition (due out in 1998, I think). The wait was worth it! This newedition contains not only the photos, some breathtaking in their beauty andclarity, and distribution maps, etc, but also pretty much everything onewould ever desire to know about herpetofauna in the Southwest. This booknow contains chapters on biogeography, examining all the Colorado habitats, conservation status and legislation, human interactions, viewing methods, and each Colorado species has its own and very thorough entry. As aprofessional herpetologist, this book is invaluable to me wherever I happento be, Colorado or no. As a complete amateur, this book would open up amysterious world! It's too heavy for a field guide, that's why there'sthose terrible Audubon things (although Patterson is good), but terriblyuseful for when you get home again. Buy this book, now! ... Read more

Description:
Because of high numbers of animals killed on Paynes Prairie State Preserve, Alachua County, Florida, the Florida Department of Transportation constructed a barrier wall-culvert system to reduce wildlife mortality yet allow for passage of some animals across the highway. During a one year study following construction, we counted only 158 animals, excluding hylid treefrogs, killed in the same area where 2411 road kills were recorded in the 12 months prior to the construction of the barrier wall-culvert system. Within the survey area lying directly in Paynes Prairie basin, mortality was reduced 65% if hylid treefrogs are included, and 93.5% with hylid treefrogs excluded. Sixty-four percent of the wildlife kills observed along the barrier wall-culvert system occurred at a maintenance road access point and along 300 m of type-A fence bordering private property. The 24 h kill rate during the post-construction survey was 4.9 compared with 13.5 during the pre-construction survey. We counted 1891 dead vertebrates within the entire area surveyed, including the ecotone between the surrounding uplands and prairie basin which did not include the barrier wall and culverts. Approximately 73% of the nonhylid road kills occurred in the 400 m section of road beyond the extent of the barrier wall-culvert system. We detected 51 vertebrate species, including 9 fish, using the 8 culverts after the construction of the barrier wall-culvert system, compared with 28 vertebrate species in the 4 existing culverts prior to construction. Capture success in culverts increased 10-fold from the pre-construction survey to the post-construction survey. Barrier wall trespass was facilitated by overhanging vegetation, maintenance road access, and by the use of the type-A fence. Additional problems resulted from siltation, water holes, and human access. These problems could be corrected using design modifications and by routine, periodic maintenance. ... Read more

Product Description
This book breaks new ground: it is the first complete listing and guide to all the known reptiles of the five East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi.) Written by expert East African herpetologists, it incorporates virtually all known information on the East African reptile fauna. Nearly 500 high-quality color photographs illustrate most of the species involved, many of which have never been illustrated in color before. Keys and introductory essays are included for all orders, families, genera, and species, giving clear introductions for every group. There is an individual account for each species, describing its appearance, habits, and habitat, accompanied by a map showing its known distribution within East Africa and notes indicating its Africa-wide distribution as well. Hence this book will be useful not only in East Africa, but in the surrounding countries as well, for which no reptile guides exist. In addition, the descriptions of dangerous snakes include a section on their venom. A comprehensive appendix discusses aspects of snakebite risk and treatment in East Africa and the do's and don'ts of first aid.

Key Features:

  • Illustrates nearly all of the c. 420 species found in East Africa
  • Contains keys and full descriptions to aid identification
  • Contains a distribution map for every species
  • Provides information on snakebite and effective first aid

5-0 out of 5 stars Maximum
This is the most perfect book for any snake or reptile fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars More an Encyclopedia than a Field Guide
This book is amazingly detailed, giving in-depth information on ALL species of reptile known to occur in the five countries covered.
The photographs are of excellent quality (though where none was available, drawings would have been better than nothing) and the keys very user-friendly.
It is an absolute must for anyone interested in the herpetofauna of this region.
A word of warning though: despite the title this book is much too bulky and heavy to carry around on the field!
More likely, you will want to keep it at home (or in your car?) as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
This is a remarkable collection of information on a sorely needed region of herpetology. Not just for advanced hobbyists either...this book has WONDERFUL photographs and is a MUST have for any level of reptile enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars REFERENCE for east african herpetology !
A great book, with descriptions and photos of al known east african reptiles, including distribution maps.

If you are interested in finding the reptiles in the field or keeping them in captivity, you must own this book !
