    Extractions: Traditional solar cells are made from "do it all" materials. Ultra pure (and expensive) silicon is need to absorb light energy, create electron holes, and also carry the charge to electrodes. Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara are working on dividing up the work in helping create cheaper solar cells. A layer of gold film is sandwiched between layers of light absorbing dyes and titanium dioxide. Each layer does a piece of the work the traditional solar cells do, but using less expensive materials. The new process does have a drawback, it is quite inefficient in converting light to energy. Currently less than one percent of the light is converted compared to 15% in pure silicon solar cells. That is quite a big difference. Of course, the technique is quite new and improvements should be on the horizon...they better be, I'm not sure many would opt for solar cells 15x the current size no matter how cheap they are. Everybody wants to know how to make po-boys, for one; it's really easy, but it can be tricky because good po-boy style French bread is nearly impossible to find outside New Orleans. I'll have to try to round up a recipe or it, for intrepid bakers. Making bread like that is an incredible amount of work. If you live in the Los Angeles area, you're in luck a bakery in Santa Monica called Le Pain du Jour (828 Pico Blvd., just east of Lincoln Blvd.) makes beautiful, perfect baguettes that are the closest thing you'll come to New Orleans-style French bread in this city. Get there early in the morning, before they run out. Once you've got the bread, that's half the battle. If you want your sandwich "dressed", as we say in the Crescent City, add mayonnaise ("mynez"), lettuce, tomatoes and if you want, dill pickles. Then fill it with fried shrimp, fried oysters (or both), tender roast beef and gravy, ham and cheese, or what is perhaps my favorite po-boy in the world ... grilled patties of Creole hot sausage with cheese. Mmmmmmm, yeah you rite!

    Extractions: To roast shrimp: Preheat oven to 500°F. Toss shrimp with garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper to taste. Arrange in single layer, evenly spaced, on large baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Roast shrimp on top rack of oven for 5 minutes, or until done. Let cool. Chill, covered, for a couple of hours or overnight. To make sandwiches: In medium-sized bowl, combine mayonnaise, sour cream, vinegar, salt and pepper to taste until smooth. Coarsely chop shrimp. Add to mayonnaise mixture with fennel. Stir well to combine. Top 1 slice bread with 1 slice prosciutto, a quarter of shrimp mixture, a couple of pieces of lettuce and another slice of bread. Repeat to make 4 sandwiches.
