Extractions: Aboriginal Digital Collections Aboriginal Digital Collections (ADC) was a pilot project undertaken in 1998/1999 by Aboriginal Business Canada and Canada's Digital Collections program. It provided jobs for some 150 Aboriginal youth working for Aboriginal organizations across the country. This pilot project presented a unique opportunity for Aboriginal Canadians to preserve, celebrate and communicate their heritage, languages and contemporary life by developing and accessing materials over the Information Highway. The material ranges from information on Aboriginal businesses and entrepreneurship to traditional knowledge and contemporary issues, such as the preservation of Aboriginal languages. Aboriginal youth created over 30 Web sites featuring significant Canadian Aboriginal material. These collections have been merged into the Canada's Digital Collections collection. Extractions: by Dave Yanko Sally Milne. LA RONGE In the early 1990s, Cree Elder Sally Milne decided she was going to become the best in the world at something. Precisely what that something was going to be, she didn't know. In fact at the time, she didn't know why she felt so compelled to excel. Milne first considered cross-country skiing. She had very little experience with the winter sport. But the date of a popular, all-abilities competition was approaching and she thought the event might be a good opportunity to measure her potential. Before it arrived, however, event organizers asked her to provide some prizes in the form of birch bark bitings she'd just recently begun to create. . . "I'm now one of the four most renowned bark biters in the world,'' Milne proclaims, her small smile growing into a hearty laugh as she adds: "There's a total of four of us in the world!'' Of course the last part is not true Milne's humor is often self-deprecating and seldom far from the surface during a chat at the La Ronge Band RCMP office where she works as an aboriginal resource person. The truth is that in less than 10 years, her exquisite designs have found their way into homes in Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, China, Australia and New Zealand. Here in North America, Canadian Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson and Hollywood movie star Bruce Willis are among those who own and admire her birch bark bitings.

Extractions: Volume 16, Number 3/4, 1991 Back to the Table of Contents Culture and Media Use in Saskatchewan Indian Country University of Ottawa This study has researched and analyzed the ways a specific population, the Treaty Indians of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, deal with mass communication media. More than 50,000 Indians scattered across a territory larger than Spain, are caught in the information age with no mass medium of their own. They view themselves as members of independent aboriginal societies that have existed for centuries and centuries; they would like to retain their identity while nevertheless participating in the larger context of Canadian society. Some historical information may be useful to understand the present. Between 1817 and 1929, the Indian/Dene nations conducted negotiations with the British government (or with Canada in the right of the Crown) which resulted in the signing of more than twenty major international treaties with in the borders of what is now called Canada. The land that became Saskatchewan in 1905 was covered by six different treaties which provide the legal base for the existence today of the province's 72 bands. The Canadian state has incorporated in its constitution and other legislation the special responsibility for Canadian Treaty Indians which it inherited from the British Crown.
