It is important for students and parents to follow these important safety tips. For Students: For Parents: Make sure your children get to the school bus stop in plenty of time. Discourage loosely fitting and baggy clothing that can get caught in handrails, in swinging doors, and on seats. The most dangerous area is at the loading and unloading areas. Instruct your children to avoid horseplay and to stay back away from the bus until it is okay to board. Instruct your children to remain seated while on the bus, and avoid horseplay or being exceptionally noisy. It is up to seven times safer for children to ride the bus to school vs. riding in the private passenger vehicle. Encourage your children to take the bus. Stop for school buses with red lights flashing...even in the school yard!

Savage, Senior Policy Specialist Every week during the school year 23.5 million children begin and end each day with a trip on a school bus. More than 400,000 school buses travel approximately 4.3 billion miles every year. Between 1989 and 1999, an average of 10 passengers were killed each year in school bus crashes. To put this in perspective, during 2001 alone, motor vehicle crashes claimed the lives of approximately 2,000 children between the ages of 5 and 15. These statistics indicate that school buses are very safe. Because of the importance of school bus transportation, NHTSA has established several safety standards to maintain this level of safety. Based on data from school bus crashes, NHTSA is able to determine what types of school bus safety standards are necessary. Specifically, NHTSA has prepared safety standards focusing on the human, vehicle and environmental variables that effect the level of safety associated with school bus transportation. Although NHTSA and several other safety organizations acknowledge that school bus transportation is virtually the safest mode of transportation in the United States, these organizations remain committed to enhancing school bus safety. This commitment requires these organizations to continue the learning process and determine methods of making this safe form of transportation even safer.

In 1999, 31 children ages 14 and under were killed in school bus-related traffic crashes. An estimated 7,000 children were injured in school bus-related incidents. More than half of the children killed were pedestrians. Many injuries happen when children are boarding or exiting the bus. A blind spot extends approximately 10 feet in front of the bus, obstructing the driver's view. Children are not aware of this blind spot and might mistakenly believe that if they can see the bus, the bus driver can see them. Arrive at the stop at least five minutes before the bus arrives.
