There is plenty of archaelogical evidence that the Roman army mixed on a day to day basis with the locals. After all most of the Roman army was made up of Celts (Gauls) from mainland Europe. The Scots have the distinction, among other things, of having been one of the few countries in the world to have withstood the Roman Empire. While the Romans plundered their way all over Europe from East to west when they entered Britain (Briton) they over ran England but when they got to the Solway Firth (the natural boundary between to Scots and the English) the Romans had two attempts at building a wall: The Antonine Wall and Hadrians Wall.The Romans would like to think that it was to keep the 'Barbarians' out of their empire but we Scots like to think that we sent them home. In fact they probably couldn't stand the rain and the cold so went home to Rome to Rome to dry out and heat up. Did you know? Interestingly Scotland has spent more of it's life being a separate country to England. It was only in the Union of the Parliaments of Scotland and England in 1707 did the merged country become the United Kingdom (being as how two kingdoms became united). Wales was always effectively a part of England and hence the UK was born. Later when the British government annexed Ulster (what is now known as Northern Ireland) the country title was The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland . Don't ask me why the Great was added - I guess this was just a throwback to the Empire when they actually thought they were great. I'm sure the people of Amritzah in India or Maoris in New Zealand wouldn't agree.

Societies Scotland's History (by Bill Jardine) The UK was formed in 1707 by the union of the Scots and English parliaments, but the Scots and English crowns were united a hundred years earlier when James VI of Scotland packed his bags and went to London to take the English crown as well. Exporting the king was seen as a good move by the Scots, who called James VI 'the wisest fool in Christendom'. James VI was the king who had the Bible translated into English. His performance as monarch of the UK can be measured by the fact that each year on November 5, the population pays homage to Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow him up. Both countries have prospered under the union, which gave many Scots the opportunity to travel the world, usually as soldiers, to kill people they'd never heard of in places they really had no wish to visit. However, this made a change, since the only people they'd fought in the past were the English. Great Britain came into being in 1801 when the Irish were invited to join. The offer was one they could not refuse at the time, but a century or so later half of them decided enough was enough and left. No-one seems to know why it's called 'Great'; maybe it's because the addition of the Irish made it bigger and Great Britain sounds better than Bigger Britain. Scotland is actually the oldest kingdom in Britain, dating back to Kenneth Mac Alpin, who stopped the resident Picts and Scots from beating the living daylights out of each other long enough to get himself crowned king. It is also the only part of the United Kingdom to have always successfully resisted invasion.

Agricola and his legions pushed northward to the Firth of Forth. The border Picts, probably joined by rebellious Britons, strenuously contested Roman sovereignty in the region between the firths of Forth and Clyde. In AD 122, to ward off the Pictish threat to the imperial positions in northern Britain, the Roman emperor Hadrian ordered construction of a rampart from Solway Firth to the mouth of the Tyne River. Remnants of this rampart, known in history as Hadrians Wall, are still extant. Two decades later another rampart, called the Antonine Wall, was constructed from the Firth of Forth to the Firth of Clyde. Many Scottish nobles and the overwhelming majority of the Scottish people bitterly resented English interference in their national affairs. Acceding to popular demand for termination of English control, Baliol in 1295 formed an alliance with France, which was then at war with England, and summoned his people to revolt. The first phase of the Scottish war of independence ended victoriously for Edward, who crushed Baliols army at Dunbar in April 1296 and decreed the annexation of Scotland to England. Baliol was deposed, and his kingdom was placed under military occupation.

Extractions: Gaelic has been spoken in Scotland for over 1500 years having been brought over from Ireland by migrants who settled in Dalriada, an area roughly equivalent to modern-day Argyllshire. From this foothold Gaelic spread throughout most of the mainland and onto the Inner and Outer Hebrides, displacing the Picts and other Celtic tribes who were already in Scotland. Only Caithness, the far south-east of the country and the northern Isles remained outside "Gaelic" Scotland. As a result, Gaelic will have been spoken in most areas of the country at one time or another and it has left an enduring legacy of place names throughout Scotland. During the 9th century AD, the Gaelic leader Kenneth MacAlpin united the Picts and the Gaels and became the first ruler of Alba, an area comprising most of Scotland north of the rivers Forth and Clyde. Alba remains the Gaelic name for Scotland as a whole. Gaelic's zenith was reached between the 12th and 13th centuries but having been replaced as the language of king's court around that time it began a gradual retreat northwards and westwards as the Scots and English language pushed in from the south. This movement was exacerbated by official persecution of the language, commercial disadvantages and later by waves of emigration.

The Edinburgh Branch of the ESU was formally inaugurated on 15th May 1930, but the ESU had been established in the city for several years before that. ESU Scotland was recognised as a distinct national organisation in 1952, and in 1961, it purchased its current headquarters, at 23 Atholl Crescent. These were purchased with the help of a bequest from William Thyne - a bequest which led to the establishment of the Thyne Scholarship. Over the last forty years, ESU Scotland has supported a broad range of programmes which have been designed to promote the effective use of spoken English, and to further international understanding. Its current programmes include scholarships, a schools debating competition and the annual Scottish American Memorial Day Service.
