As with tea ceremony, Japanese ceramics evolved into an art form placing aesthetic values ahead of function, an excellence now recognized all over the world. To step into this traditional field, students previously had to enter an apprenticeship or a specialized school. The ceramics curriculum that we have developed at Kyoto Seika University is more appropriate to this university`s atmosphere, emphasizing a view of ceramics as a modern and creative art form, using clay as a medium of self-expression. We encourage students to be imaginative and diverse in their thinking. We do not believe in teaching ceramics: instead, we believe that our job is to stimulate the creativity of each individual. Students must themselves overcome the initial obstacles that occur when working in this field. During our four-year program, students experience interaction with others who are rich in individual character, absorbing the technical side as well as the human side of this art form. These two aspects cannot be separated, as techniques are always selected according to human considerations. We expect our students to look beyond this campus, and to become active in this region's art community, connecting with industry and other artists to experience real life collaboration in the technical and human aspects of their art, and to absorb all that is learned into their personal experience.

There are also many projects to follow about half the book with excellent photographs. Hunter, a Tennessee sculptor, has really done her technical research, and she's got the right idea in using different mixes for different purposes. This book is all you need to start and continue to learn with. I recommend it highly.

Extractions: FALL 1995 COHEN SYLLABUS FOR ART-325 SCULPTURE: PLASTER AND STONE CARVING Art-325 is an introduction to two basic approaches to sculpture: direct plaster form building(additive approach), and stone carving (subtractive approach). This course will study the primary elements of form, spatial relationships, the dynamics of sculptural organization and form, and the concepts that relate to visual language. This course will explore a variety of sculptural techniques, processes, and strategies, as well as varied approaches to organizing and building form. Emphasis will be placed on sustained study and resolution of two major projects. The student will explore the logical development and refinement of ideas, and their application and transformation into sculptural form. Class assignments will be designed to encompass and acquaint the student with traditional and modern points of view. Students will also become conversant with the major issues in the creative process and the development of sculpture form from germinal ideas to finished works. The semester will be divided into two units of study, each unit being approximately 7 weeks long. These two units will include an introduction and explanation of the assignment, slide lectures, demonstrations, and preparatory approaches and study. ASSIGNMENTS Two sculptural assignments will be required for completion of the course, though shorter related studies may also be required. Each work will be assigned a given number of in-class working periods, and each assignment will require several hours of outside work. The introduction and explanation to each assignment will be noted on the class calendar. It is imperative that students be present for the introduction and discussion of each new assignment. ATTENDANCE You are expected to attend class regularly. Frequent absences disrupt the continuity of your work and very negatively affect the outcome and quality of your work. Sculptural assignments require consistent focused work periods. Students can not cram to finish a work at the last moment. It is not possible to accomplish the completion of a thoughtful and reasoned work in a short time frame. Students who are chronically absent will be warned by the instructor if their attendance is excessive. Poor attendance will lower the course grade. A student's grade will be lowered a full grade point for chronic absence. Participation and Shared Class Responsibilities It is the student's responsibility to attend and participate in all critiques. Self evaluation and critical awareness is achieved through class discussion and careful review of each student work. In addition to group critiques each student will have an opportunity to establish a critical dialogue though individual critiques. I make the practice of working with every student at every class meeting to discuss the development of your work. In addition I am available to meet with you during my office hours should you wish to discuss your work and progress in class. It is the responsibility of all students to clean up at the conclusion of class, or at any other time that you are working in the sculpture area. The sculpture area is fortunate to possess a large and growing collection of tools and equipment. Every effort should be made to respect and maintain this property. All tools should be cleaned properly after using them and tools and equipment should not be misused. Persons working in the sculpture area not permitted to use any power equipment unless they have the permission of the instructor. GRADING POLICY Your final grade for the course will be based on the average of all of the grades you have received. Each of the two major assignments will receive a grade as well as the preparatory works made for each assignment. Work will be evaluated on the basis of individual progress and improvement, on the basis of your comprehension and understanding of the materials covered in the sculpture assignments, on your grasp of fundamental concepts, on originality and invention, on craftsmanship. Late work will be down graded. I will post the grades at the completion of each project. MATERIALS A materials and equipment list will be supplied to you. Students will be required to purchase their own tools and materials. Some specialized tools will be made available for student use. You will be able to purchase most of your tools and materials at the William and Mary bookstore. You must present a receipt of payment to the instructor for the purchase of expendable materials that you will be using in the course and which have been ware housed in the sculpture area. Extractions: Fall 2002 Course Description This studio course is an introduction to sculpture making. Students will work on a sequence of assignments exploring both formal and conceptual issues in sculpture making. This exploration will evolve through the comprehension of the elements: line, shape, mass, volume, texture, color; and the principles: unity, variety, balance, emphasis, rhythm, proportion and scale; when manipulating materials in space. Throughout the semester a variety of basic tools, materials and techniques will be introduced to students. A thorough knowledge of the above will enable students to clarify ideas and articulate sculptural form. At the completion of each assignment the work will be evaluated by way of a group critique. In preparation for these critiques there will be a constant dialogue maintained between the instructors and students, with emphasis on the terminology used to describe the elements of three-dimensional forms and their effects on each other. Course Objectives This course is designed to extend your comprehension of sculpture making beyond clay modeling.
