Extractions: Art Courses The visual arts program is designed for students with the desire to express themselves through art materials, enrich their cultural awareness and, for some, explore career possibilities. The art courses are organized on a discipline-based approach which incorporates history, evaluation, and aesthetic understanding. It is the goal of the art program to provide students with a journey of artistic discovery for creative self expression and personal fulfillment while using right brain functions considered essential for tomorrows leaders, inventors, thinkers and artists. Students will be expected to analyze, critique, learn about, as well as produce, art. The EVHS Art Department is designed with survey courses which MUST be taken before entering the classes of concentrated study. The survey classes offer a foundation of artistic study by letting the student sample a variety of art media and projects as well as work with the elements and principles of art and design which are fundamental to all art forms. Since the survey classes are offered only once each year and must be taken in progression, it is strongly suggested that the seriously interested student take Survey A, B, C, and D the first year, thus meeting requirements for all other classes.

Extractions: Sonya Moran Born in London, England in 1963, Sonya studied art throughout high school before going on to complete a nursing degree. Seemingly satisfied with this safe career option, Sonya worked as a nurse for 6 years after completing her studies. In 1986 Sonya took an extended break from nursing to travel, and eventually made her way to a popular tourist destination, Hamilton Island, Australia. There she met Foot Young, an American Sculptor. Entranced by the living nature of marble sculpture, Sonya decided to stay on an re-examine her earlier passion for art, now that such an exciting medium had presented itself. For four years she worked and studied with Foot, learning the fundamentals of carving form in driftwood and marble, as well as learning mould making techniques. Sonya started exhibiting her work in the Hamilton Island Gallery the year she arrived. Since that inaugural moment, Sonya has now taken part in over 35 exhibitions and sold her work by com mission to private collectors throughout Australia and the world In 1990 Sonya moved to the Australian mainland to set up her own studio. In 1993 moved her studio to the alternative creative nucleus of Australia, Byron Bay where she is still based. In that time she has produced hundreds of works her inspiration coming from the natural beauty that surrounds Byron Bay, and from her extensive and continuing travels around the world.

Before the 1920s, temple and folk sculpture were the only sculptural forms thriving in Taiwan, and it was not until the 1970s that sculpture was widely accepted as a fine-art genre. Taiwan's first fine-art sculptor was Huang Tu-shui ¶À¤g¤ô, born in 1906. Like many painters of his generation, he studied Western-style techniques at the Tokyo Fine Arts Institute. His most celebrated works are of water buffaloes, an animal that symbolizes the heart of the Taiwan countryside. The most renowned sculptor after Huang was Chen Hsia-yu ³¯®L«B, who was also trained in Japan and returned to Taiwan after World War II to create realistic portraits and figures, often of women in pensive poses. The tide of Western-oriented abstraction that swept through the local art world in the 1960s produced the first Taiwan sculptor to gain worldwide attention. Yuyu Yang (also known as Yang Ying-feng ·¨^·), who died in 1997, was most famous for his stainless steel sculptures, which often converted traditional Chinese symbols like the phoenix and dragon into fluid abstract forms. Extractions: Students continuing in art beyond the diploma requirement may take additional 300 level courses or 400 level courses. At the advanced level, two pathways are possible: advanced concentration courses and synthesis courses. As each 400 level course varies in requirements, it is important to check the prerequisites for each one. In the second term of architecture, students will be encouraged to explore architectural design at greater depth. Students will continue to design through the use of sketches, drawings, and models in a variety of different media, as well as with computer aided design. Through the study of historical precedents, students will consider such issues as approach, entry, structural organization, materiality, and form. Term-long projects will often be assigned, giving students the chance to discover their own approach to integrating all of the necessary concepts into an architectural design. Prerequisite: Art 301 Architecture I, Art 304 Drawing or Art 308 Sculpture I. (Ms. Harrison) This course is designed for students who have taken Art 302 and wish to continue their study of ceramics. As an advanced course, students in Art 402 will be asked to expand on their existing knowledge of ceramics, to strengthen their technical skills and to seek sophisticated conceptual and personal solutions to given assignments. Class projects will range it topic but will stress the concept of developing ideas in series; a series of bottle shapes, a series of vase shapes, etc. As a class, we will try to place ceramics within the continuum of artistic practice and explore its various manifestations. Students can expect to do some outside reading, to attend slide and video presentations and to visit the Addison and Peabody museums. Students will also participate in all aspects of the making and finishing of their work. This course has a required evening lab. Prerequisite: Art 302 Ceramics I. (Mr. Zaeder)
