Extractions: waters, catching species such as salmon (an introduced species), walleye, perch, small mouth bass, steelhead and trout. Commercial species vary with each lake and may include such fish as lake whitefish, rainbow smelt, lake herring, and yellow perch. Combined, sport and commercial fisheries in the Great Lakes are valued at more than $4 billion annually. The health of our fisheries depends upon continuing research and education. Fish populations change in response to such factors as aquatic nuisance species, habitat loss and pollution. Michigan Sea Grant conducts scientific research aimed at understanding fish populations in order to provide a basis for sound fishery management. Sea Grant's extension agents located around the state conduct regional fishery workshops to convey up-to-date research information, provide training and technical assistance to fishery businesses, and work to foster continued cooperation among a variety of user groups.

This timeline presents the broad expertise Fisheries Extension offers. Early 1970s Researchers helped fishermen catch the most possible fish with the least consumption of fuel by increasing size of fishing net opening to increase capacity and reduce drag. URI 340 fishing net, created at University of Rhode Island Bay Campus, one of the biggest breakthroughs in fishing gear technology. Held annual Fishermen's Forums, teaching hundreds of New England fishermen about the latest fishing techniques and equipment, and legal, financial and resource issues. He also served as the center's liaison to the New England Fishery Management Council and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council. He received a B.S. in education (mathematics) from Dana College, Blair, Neb., in 1961 and a Ph.D. in fisheries biology from the University of Minnesota in 1969.

Commercial Fishing Show can take a break from researching the latest in fishing equipment and services to learn about the latest research from the North Carolina Fishery Resource Grant (FRG) and the North Carolina Blue Crab Research programs. The 23 rd Annual N.C. Commercial Fishing Show will be held at the Riverfront Convention Center in New Bern Feb. 22 - 23. The show is a hosted by the N.C. Fisheries Association (NCFA). In addition to vendors, educational exhibits will include programs such as North Carolina Sea Grant. Seminars on Saturday, Feb. 22 will feature results from FRG and the Blue Crab projects. The program runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The seminars have been well received in the past, according to Sea Grant fisheries specialist Bob Hines. "They are an opportunity for the general public and fishing families in particular to learn about the results from FRG and Blue Crab projects," he says. Funded by the North Carolina General Assembly, the Blue Crab and FRG programs are administered by North Carolina Sea Grant. Both programs seek to involve people who make a living in fishing industries in projects that explore ways to improve and protect the state's fishery resources. Frequently, projects are collaborative efforts with academic researchers.
