    Extractions: December 1995 A Product of Oregon's Sea Grant Program Sea lions are entertaining to watch. You may find them body-surfing on the waves and sunbathing on the rocks. And they are very observant. Along the coast of Oregon, sometimes you can see the sea lions bobbing around in the ocean with only their heads sticking out of the waves, observing the scene around them. From a distance they look like fat black snakes coming out of the sea; but of course, it's only sea lions treading water. (If you like to watch sea lions, you are apt to find that they like to watch you too.) Though they are not actually related to lions, there is at least one kind of sea lion with some particularly lion like characteristics. This is the Steller Sea Lion, also known as the Northern Sea Lion. The large male Stellers have thick tawny hair around their neck and shoulders, which looks somewhat like a lion's mane (at least you can stretch your imagination to see the resemblance.) Large male Stellers, grow to 9-11 feet and weight up to a ton. During breeding season the big bulls climb up on the rocks to breed. Sea lions do not have 'Harems', they defend a territory and breed with receptive frmales that pass through their territory.The big males roar and fight with other males. This is a noisy time of year that's also potentially dangerous from all the fighting. When baby sea lions are born they stay on the crowded rocks with the females and other pups until they are old enough to go swimming and fishing. Historically, most of these sea lions have lived way up north in the waters around Alaska. But in recent times , the sea lions have been disappearing from Alaskan waters. Scientists are not sure what is causing the population decline. Steller sea lions were listed as a threatened species on the Federal Endangered Species list in 1990.

Hidden on the left side of Pier 39 (enourmous shopping mall) are hundreds of sea lions basking in the sun. They have taken over a marina that held boats and are an incredible natural attraction. Just walk to the end of Pier 39 on the left side along the backs of the stores and behold the sea lions. They lie there, in the sun and bark- arf arf! Many people crowd around to see the sea lions, but many others never even realize they are there. If you visit the wharf, don't miss the sea lions! Tacky and over-priced, but clever we noticed this mini bungee jumping for kids on our last hideous visit to Fisherman's Wharf. For $6, your child can be suspended from elastic cords and jump on a trampoline. Stupid as this sounds, it is a pretty cool thing also just to the left of Pier 39 in the courtyard area. Stellers are light to reddish-brown and bulky. Their thick necks resemble a lion's mane, which contributes to their name.

STORY: Mounted high on a cliff overlooking the rocks of Chiswell Island, a popular Steller sea lion rookery in the northern Gulf of Alaska, a video camera sends images of sea lions coming and going from the island directly to the Alaska SeaLife Center, some 35 miles away in Seward. It was while watching video of the rookery that SeaLife Center researcher John Maniscalco first noticed something odd about some of the sea lions. MANISCALCO: "We started seeing a few California sea lions out at Chiswell Island through our remotely operated cameras."

There are two types of Sea Lions that are quite prevalent in the southern Vancouver Island area. The California, and the Stellar. How can you tell the difference? Well, that is actually quite simple. The Stellar is the largest of the Sea Lions, it can weigh upwards of 450kg (1000lb) and can be "the size of a large black bear, with the strength and teeth to match." Stellars tend to be a tan color whereas the California Sea Lion is a more chocolate-brown. The most pronounced feature that separates them is the high forehead of the California, which can't be mistaken. After it appeared that everyone had taken all of the photos that they wanted of the enigmatic Sea Lions, the skipper started the boat once more and headed to the last known position of the Gray Whales. As the boat grudgingly ripped through the racing tide the skipper spoke over the roar of the engines, "I just spotted a Gray Whale about 1 nautical mile off our bow, looks like your lucky day!"
