Extractions: More than a dozen companies have licensed the new standard for exchanging data between semiconductors The HyperTransport standard for exchanging data between semiconductors is picking up speed. More than a dozen companies have licensed the new standard, the HyperTransport Consortium, an the industry group charged with stewarding the technology, announced on Monday. Acer Laboratories, Altera, AMCC, Fast-Chip, Flow Engines, GDA Technologies, Josipa Company, LEDA Systems, Marvell Semiconductor, Nokia, Spinnaker Networks, Teradyne, Xilinx and 0-In Design Automation have all licensed the technology and agreed to work further to develop it. HyperTransport was originally developed by Advanced Micro Devices for exchanging data between multiple processors in servers. But the technology's reach has broadened into networking and other applications. Meanwhile, 3GIO, a similar technology developed by Intel, will complement HyperTransport as the eventual successor to PCI, the longtime standard for connecting devices such as graphics cards and network cards to computers. Texas Instruments joined the HyperTransport Consortium earlier in November. AMD recently announced plans to use HyperTransport processors, beginning with its Hammer family of desktop PCs and server processors. TI is expected to use the technology in its chipsets for cellular phones.
Extractions: Semiconducting plastics could be the future of low-cost display technology, says a scientist from Xerox A scientist at Xerox on Tuesday detailed how to create inexpensive semiconducting plastics that may finally fulfill the promise of reducing the cost of display technology for laptops, cellphones and other devices. Beng Ong, a research fellow at Xerox Research Center of Canada, presented the findings at the Materials Research Conference in Boston. Semiconducting plastics have qualities similar to those of silicon, which is the foundation for semiconductors. The advantage of the new development in semiconducting plastics would be screens that are lighter, more flexible, and less costly to make. Ong's work described how to create organic polymers , which could, in a sense, be used as ink to print circuits that would sharply lower the cost of manufacturing displays. Organic polymers are molecules that contain a long string of carbon atoms and make versatile plastics. Scientists have long worked with plastics in an attempt at challenging silicon. But the substitute materials have been beset by a host of problems, including the cost of making the alternative polymers and the fact that these organic semiconductors decayed when exposed to air. The researchers said this new material, polythiophene, is significantly better in performance, cost and durability when compared with the currently established polymers.

The industry saw its revenue fall 32 percent in 2001, from $205 billion to $139 billion, making it the worst downturn ever, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). Although we remain bullish on many of last year's Red Herring 100 picks, like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which specializes in chip fabrication, and Applied Materials, which makes equipment for chip factories, the downturn affected their businesses so negatively that we had little choice but to exclude them from this year's list. Chip designers, like Nvidia, and makers of software tools for designing chips, like Magma Design Automation, fared better. These companies create compelling new products that customers want to buy.
