Extractions: The 14th century marked the zenith of the Serbian Orthodox Church, which was instrumental in forming national culture and identity. In June 1389, a decisive confrontation took place that would settle the fate of the region for centuries to come and serve as the key symbol in Serbian national consciousness. This was the Battle of Kosovo in southern Serbia, in which an allied force of Serbs and Bosnians was defeated by the advancing Ottoman Turks. Serbia thereafter became an Ottoman vassal state. Another insurrection in 1876, followed by a declaration of war on Turkey, led to another Serbian defeat. However, a new player in the region, the Austrians, offered protection to the Serbs and prevented them from falling under Turkish suzerainty again. The Balkan republics now started to assume their modern form. Bosnia and Herzegovina merged in 1876. Two years later, the new republic was occupied by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Serbian independence was settled at the Treaty of Berlin in 1878, where Montenegro was also recognised as an independent state and was doubled in size. In the first years of the 1900s, however, the Serbian-Habsburg relationship began to sour and by 1905, Serbian policy had become avowedly nationalist and anti-Austrian.

The Turkish Empire was already faced with a deep internal crisis without any hope of recuperating. This had a particularly hard effect on the Christian nations living under its rule. The Serbs launched not only a national revolution but a social one as well and gradually Serbia started to catch up with the European states with the introduction of the bourgeois society values. Resulting from the uprisings and subsequent wars against the Ottoman Empire, the independent Principality of Serbia was formed and granted international recognition in 1878. This period was marked by the alternation of two dynasties descending from Djordje Petrovic - Karadjordje, leader of the First Serbian Uprising and Milos Obrenovic, leader of the Second Serbian Uprising. Further development of Serbia was characterized by general progress in economy, culture and arts, primarily due to a wise state policy of sending young people to European capitals to get an education. They all brought back a new spirit and a new system of values. One of the external manifestations of the transformation that the former Turkish province was going through was the proclamation of the Kingdom of Serbia in 1882. In the second half of 19th century Serbia was integrated into the constellation of European states and the first political parties were founded thus giving new momentum to political life. The coup d'etat in 1903, bringing Karadjordje's grandson to the throne with the title of King Petar I opened the way for parliamentary democracy in Serbia. Having received a European education, this liberal king translated "On Freedom" by John Stewart Mile and gave his country a democratic constitution. It initiated a period of parliamentary government and political freedom interrupted by the outbreak of the liberation wars. The Balkan wars 1912 - 1913, terminated the Turkish domination in the Balkans. Turkey was pushed back across the channel, and national Balkan states were created in the territories it withdrew from.

Two million Yugoslavs had been killed and a further 3.5 million were displaced. In 1945 a Constituent Assembly abolished the monarchy and proclaimed a federation of six republics: Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovenia and Macedonia. It also created two autonomous regions within Serbia - Kosovo and Voivodina. Under President Tito, Yugoslavia kept its distance from the Soviet bloc as part of the Non-Aligned Movement, and over the next 20 years enjoyed economic growth. However, the early 1970s saw a slight economic decline and worsening relations between the country's ethnic groups - particularly between Serbs and Croats. Following Tito's death in 1980, there were riots in the autonomous region of Kosovo, and many Serbs and Montenegrins left. By 1990, all of the republics except for Serbia and Montenegro were demanding independence or to become part of a confederation.

Even before the occupation the economic life of Serbia had been more gravely disorganized than that of any other belligerent State. And what did the "bearers of Kultur" do under these circumstances? To the already formidable exactions of war weighing so heavily upon the population, they added the weight of an unjust economic policy. The first act of the authorities of occupation consisted in interning in Austria-Hungary, for no reason and from no political or military necessity, more than 150,000 persons belonging to the civil population. Serbia was thus stripped of the last reserves in the way of labor which she still possessed and countless families lost their last resources. Hundreds of thousands of children, women and old men were in this fashion condemned to die of starvation. An even more horrible fate was in store for those who were interned, and the country was drained completely of the working population which might have helped it to carry on. This was the first and most important act on the part of the invaders, in so far as their activity bears upon the economic, social, and intellectual reconstruction of occupied Serbia. The axe likewise constitutes a very important instrument of propaganda in Austro-German culture. The way in which the forests, those most vital assets of a country like ours, are being treated today in Serbia, not only represents excessive depredation but actual total destruction. To take but one example, the forest of Ragot, the property of the State, was one of the most beautiful, and one of the oldest forests in the heart of Serbia. It was worth several millions. Today this forest is a thing of the past. It has been felled to the last tree. An empty desolate waste has taken its place. The rest of the Serbian forests, some like the forests of Kopaonik, Tara and Rudnik even larger and more valuable, have suffered the same fate. The sullen blows of the Austrian axe resound in the depths of the forests of Shumadia like the blows of a hammer upon an anvil.
