If a person has difficulty with some phase of the sexual response cycle or a person experiences pain with sexual intercourse, he/she may have a sexual dysfunction. Examples of sexual dysfunctions include: Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder. This disorder may be present when a person has decreased sexual fantasies and a decreased or absent desire for sexual activity. In order to be considered a sexual disorder the decreased desire must cause a problem for the individual. In this situation the person usually does not initiate sexual activity and may be slow to respond to his/her partner's sexual advances. This disorder can be present in adolescents and can persist throughout a person's life. Many times, however, the lowered sexual desire occurs during adulthood, often times following a period of stress.

Cardoso, PhD Sexual impotence, also defined as erectile dysfunction, is a very common problem which affects most men at least once during their lifetime. The incidence of erectile dysfunction varies with age, and increases in the proportion of affected men, from 7 to 8 %, from 20 to 39 years of age; to 55-60 %, in men older than 70 years; according to a study carried out in the USA. The largest increase is seen in men in the range of 60-69 years. Is is estimated that at least 10 million men suffer from chronic impotence in the USA, and that at least 20 million more men have less severe forms of erectile dysfunction associated to age, chronic health problems or psychological problems. Although in the past sexual impotence was regarded as having almost exclusively psychic causes, we now know that from 85 to 90 % of all cases of erectile dysfunction have organic causes, such as peripheral vascular diseases, diabetes, imbalances in the sexual hormones, the effect of medications, etc. This has encouraged medical science to discover new forms of treatment, which are available and work well for a large number of patients. These treatments range from oral tablets and vasoactive drugs which can be injected into the penis, to vacuum pumps and implantable penis prostheses. Efectiveness of therapies may range from 40 to 90 %, depending on the proper choice of method.

The sexually addicted individual becomes addicted to the neuro-chemical changes that take place in the body during sexual behaviour, much as a drug addict becomes hooked on the effects of "shooting" heroin. This is not to say that the expression of one as a sexual being, an intensely pleasurable, life-enhancing experience for the majority of the population, is an inherently addictive reality. Contrary to enjoying sex as a self-affirming source of physical pleasure, the sex addict has learned to rely on sex for comfort from pain, for nurturing or relief from stress; this is comparable to the alcoholic's purposeful use of alcohol. The beginnings of sexual addiction are usually rooted in adolescence or childhood. For starters, the child often grows up in a chaotic, hostile or neglectful home. Or, the family may have been very normal otherwise, but the child grows up emotionally starved for love because affection is rarely expressed. The child may turn repeatedly to masturbation to escape the parents' violent arguments, for instance, or to make up for an unconscious lack of attention or affection. Masturbation can be a normal and natural part of childhood, but for the lonely, abused or rejected child can become a regular sedative, much like marijuana, to hide the inner pain. Gradually, sex becomes a replacement for other things, a convenient act to turn to in times of any kind of need, from escaping boredom to feeling anxious, to being able to go to sleep at night.

In addition, there is little motivation to seek stimuli and diminished frustration when deprived of the opportunity for sexual expression. The individual usually does not initiate sexual activity or may only engage in it reluctantly when it is initiated by the partner. As with all sexual disorders, HSDD can be classified as lifelong (existing for the entirety of the person’s adult life) or acquired (developed after a period of normal functioning). It can also be classified as generalized (occurring across all partners, sexual activities, and situations) or situational (limited to certain partners, sexual practices, or situations). One important factor in the diagnosis of HSDD as with all sexual disorders is that the condition is distressing to the individual and/or is interfering with their life in some way. The following are the diagnostic criteria for HSDD as provided by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV, 1994):
