Help There is a wonderful holiday snap of the great modern architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe near the end of his life - sitting on one of the concentric rings of stone seats at the theatre of Epidaurus. Designed by Polycleitus and built between c350 and 330BC, this 13,000-seat semi-circular Greek theatre has never really been bettered. Its acoustic is pretty much perfect, its elemental design and natural setting mesmerising. Mies strived for half a century to achieve this level of architectural purity in his designs for modern houses, offices and art galleries (but never a theatre). He almost got there.

Extractions: The Utah Shakespearean Festival, founded by Fred C. Adams, is located on as well as adjacent to the campus of Southern Utah University in Cedar City. Each summer it typically presents three plays of Shakespeare and, with the addition of a second theater, other plays from world drama. The idea of a Shakespearean center located on the Southern Utah University campus was being developed as early as 1960. The first plays were performed in 1962 on a makeshift stage outside under pine trees and stars. The performers and technicians were college students, teachers, and Cedar City townspeople. The first season lasted one week. The goals of the Shakespearean Festival from the beginning have been to present quality productions of Shakespeare's plays for Utah residents and visitors and to educate young students about the pleasures and values of Shakespeare's and other dramatists' work.

These stunning recreations celebrate the recent opening of the new Globe Theatre in London, and show how stimulating Shakespeare's work can be when experienced in context. The programs will: 1. The Audience (19:12) Alan Davies introduces the theme and we see footage of the new Globe's 1997 production of Henry V, showing the actors and audience interacting. Alan talks about Shakespeare's audience, then appears in period costume, as a barman in a tavern in 1599, observing the customers as they watch a troupe of traveling players. Two members of the audience talk about contemporary issues, such as the Plague and the Puritans' attacks on the new theatres. These two characters move on to talk about the experience of going to the theatre the crowds and the cost (one penny). They talk about what people enjoy about the theatre, such as seeing how Kings and Queens behave, witnessing murders and seeing their 'betters' mocked.

Every year since 1990, the Britisher of the Millennium William Shakespeare is remembered around this time of the year by the Shakespeare Centre Sri Lanka. A non-commercial organisation, it had worked hard for promotion of Shakespearean Theatre and theatre-in-education among children. It has its wings and influence spread outside Colombo into distant places in such districts as Badulla, Hambantota, Bandarawela, Kurunegala, Kandy, Galle etc. Workshops, seminars and production of stage plays had been conducted by them regularly for the benefit of theatre enthusiasts of all ages. Shakespeare Clubs formed in schools in various parts of the island are instrumental in organising numerous activities on drama and theatre. After a number of years performing musical dinner theatre ( Oliver My Fair Lady Grease in high school, it was Kevin's first performance in college as one of Michael Tolaydo's murderers in Richard III which would truly galvanize his interest in theatre. The production was his first experience with both Shakespearean performance and Stage Combat. The Crucible found Kevin filling 70-year-old shoes as Francis Nurse, and Wormwood In between rehearsals for performances and recitals Kevin was also honing his craft as a director, and most of his friends managed to get drafted for an audition (or sometimes just getting handed a role) for his first fledgling one-act plays. Following a spring of puppetry with the and propmaking for The Song Of The Lusitanian Bogey , The University of Maryland's Shakespeare On Wheels troupe brought Kevin back to Shakespeare with a vengeance.
