Extractions: by Charles E. Petty With Sydney 2000 already fading from the public consciousness I am struck by the inequities, the triumphs, tragedies and paradoxes that were seen in these games. We saw the magic of human beings doing the impossible. Who can forget the cherubic giant of a man, in a sport virtually unknown in this country, soundly defeating a legend who had not lost a match in thirteen years. But we also saw the lowest of the low. It truly torques me... in these days of paid professional Olympic athletes... to know what the shooters (and Greco-Roman wrestlers) go through. Maybe if they win a medal they'll have a little sponsor money from a gun or ammo company but for the most part they do it in the truest Olympic tradition of amateur athletics. I want to vomit when I see the "dream team" jiveassin around the track at the opening ceremonies... or a runner taunting the people behind at the finish line. It is a good thing I don't run that show. If I did the entire 4x400-relay team would forever be banned from wearing anything with USA on it. They presented to countless millions of people around the world an image that defines ugly American

Extractions: Shooting Sports - Many Choices By Don Hall Can you name any other sport that has so many different disciplines ? For most sports the rules relate to only one way to play. Variations may occur by Country or for special events such as the Olympics. But for a variety of disciplines - the shooting sports must surely hold a record ! Start with "black powder" and revel in the history of these fine firearms that have been with us for centuries. There are opportunities to fire both the muskets and the more modern 'catridge' guns. While most of us think of black powder shooting being very short range you will find it stimulating to talk to folks who regularly shoot these guns in competition out to 1000 yards. Yep, that's not a misprint! We all know about the venerable .22 rifle, with the exception of a few urbanites that is. Most kids had one, or wanted one. It is the ideal gun for young folk to learn their safety rules and how to shoot. For this rifle there are sporting rifle three position matches. A newer event is the silhouette match using steel targets at ranges up to 100 metres - all fired from the standing position ! Don't forget the Olympic Biathalon, one of the most challenging competitions in the Olympics - full speed skiing and then slowing the heartbeat to be able to hit a target.....Canada has Olympic Gold here! Moving on to the .22 match rifle this is primarily a prone event fired at 50 and 100 yards/metres. National and International competitions have taken place for many years - another Olympic Gold here ! There are also three position matches, and more recently bench rest matches at 50 and 100 yards have evolved... plus a "Palma type" prone match fired at 200 yards. Shotguns, with variations within their specialties of trap, skeet, and sporting clays provide entertainment for spectators. Great practice to improve one's eye and hand co-ordination...Olympic Gold here!

Extractions: Olympic Games Olympic Shooting Sports Shooting has been an Olympic sport since the first Olympic Games in 1896. It is the only sport to feature in both winter and summer Olympics, in the Biathlon, Shooting and Modern Pentathlon programmes. Shooting attracted the third highest number of participating nations in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games - 100 different countries entered teams. Where most sports involve speed or strength or agility, shooting calls for stillness, co-ordination, and concentration, as well as excellent vision and quick reactions. To succeed at the Olympic Games, these skills must be developed to an amazing level and the athlete must be able to perform with extreme precision and discipline no matter what the situation. Until the Atlanta Olympic Games, Australia had won only one Olympic medal since 1900, by pistol shooter Patti Dench in Los Angeles in 1984. In 1996 Michael Diamond broke the drought with his gold medal and Olympic Record in the trap event, to be followed two days later by Double Trap medals from Russell Mark (gold) and Deserie Wakefield (bronze). Australia finished 5th out of 100 nations on the shooting medals table in Atlanta. In the lead up to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. The Olympic Athlete Programme squad consisted of 48 athletes, 12 of whom were residential scholarship holders at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
