For the first time in Winter Olympic history artificial refrigeration was utilized for speed skating events and electronic computers were used to tally results. The VIII Winter Olympics propelled Squaw Valley into the world spotlight and spurred a tremendous growth in winter sports - especially alpine skiing. In 1960 Squaw Valley had four double chair lifts and a rope tow. Lunn, a son of a London travel agent, spent his years traveling through the Alps and envisioning racing through the majestic range. Lunn organized the first slalom in 1922 in Muerren, Switzerland, and joined forces with Schneider two years later to organize the race that would become the first Olympic alpine event. Alpine skiing is among the most exciting Olympics events and was introduced to the Olympic program at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Games with a men's and women's combined event, featuring a downhill and two slalom runs. After the cancellation of the following two Games because of war, alpine skiing returned to St. Moritz with a program of six events.
