Extractions: There are 6 species of lizards in West Virginia in 3 families. Some of these are very common in the state. Fence lizards and five-lined skinks can easily be found on dry forested hillsides or around old buildings. Ground skinks are common in localized areas, though they are difficult to find because of their secretive nature. Broad-heads and coal skinks are more difficult to find. The six-lined racerunner was just added to the state list this August. Only one population is known in the state and it is likely that the lizard has entered West Virginia via railroad bridges crossing the Potomac River from Maryland! All of the lizards in West Virginia are relatively small in size (between 4 - 12 inches long). They are all insectivores and active during the daytime, usually during the hottest months of the year. Extractions: Eumeces laticeps These impressive lizards are common residents of the southeastern U.S.. They can be seen racing up the trunk of a large oak tree or resting in a patch of sunlight on the forest floor. Some local residents call these lizards "scorpions" under the false assumption that they have a venomous bite or sting. A bite from a skink is no more than a harmless pinch however, ingesting one of these lizards can make some animals very sick. Cats and dogs occasionally die from the strong neurological poison after eating one. Broad-headed skink hatchlings emerging from a rotten log. Juvenile Broad-headed skinks can easily be confused with two similar skink species. Broad-headed skinks pose no threat to humans and are quite beneficial at controlling pests. They are ravenous feeders preying on insects, spiders and even small lizards and mammals. Female skinks lay from 8 to 12 eggs in the early spring in a rotten log or stump. Skinks will guard their eggs for a couple of months until the 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 inch long hatchlings emerge. Baby "Broadheads" have a bold striped pattern and a bright blue tail which gradually fades as they get bigger. Adult females retain some of the striped pattern but males turn a solid

Extractions: Eumeces fasciatus Five-lined skinks are fairly common on the Savannah River Site. They live in wooded areas with plenty of leaf litter and rotting logs. Five-lined skinks also inhabit the wooded edges of swamps. They are black with five broad, light-colored stripes down their backs. The tails of juveniles are blue.Males have a reddish-orange head.Five-lined skinks range in length from 5 to 8 inches. They can be found from southern New England to northern Florida and extend west to eastern Texas, north to Kansas, Wisconsin and southern Canada. Five-lined skinks eat insects, spiders, earthworms and crustaceans. Back to top Southeastern Five-lined Skink Eumeces inexpectatus Southeastern five-lined skinks are common on the Savannah River Site. They live in damp wooded areas, as well as dry scrub oak forests. They can also be found near seasonal wetlands that dry during the summer. These skinks are good climbers. They are blackish-brown with five narrow, light-colored stripes down their backs. The tail can be blue or gray, and males have a reddish-orange head. Southeastern five-lined skinks range in size from 5 to 8 inches. They can be found from southern Maryland and Virginia to the Florida Keys and extend west to Louisiana and northeast to Kentucky. They primarily feed on insects and spiders.
