Extractions: Cockatiels are among the most popular pet birds. Small parrots with a variety of color patterns and a crest, they are attractive as well as friendly and easy to tame. Because of their small size, cockatiel care and taming is easier than some other parrot species. They are capable of mimicking speech, although they can be difficult to understand. However, they are quite good at whistling and can often be taught to whistle tunes. Choosing a Bird It is best to choose a hand fed baby or at least a young bird that has been handled regularly. Prices will vary with color and you can expect to pay a bit more from a conscientious breeder, but a well handled young bird is worth any extra cost. Cockatiels are quite widely available at pet stores, but these birds may have an unknown history. As a result, they may be older, not used to being handled, and harder to tame.

Call NVC for an appointment with "Dr.Jack" Sugar Gliders From New Guinea, Australia or Indonesian rain forests comes this small nocturnal tree dwelling Marsupial that is related to Kangaroos and Opossums. They are highly social and live in groups, so as with Ferrets and Prairie Dogs a second "buddy" is advisable. These docile creatures are fun to watch and handle, but require large cages, a hide box for sleeping/security and lots of branches for their tree dwelling nature. They are prone to malnutrition often causing rear end paralysis, parasites, pneumonia and malocclusion, so consult an experienced exotic veterinarian prior to any problems. They live 10 to 15 years and require a diet of fresh chopped fruit and vegetables, a vitamin/mineral supplement (Nekton Lori is best) and fresh gut loaded insects such as Crickets, Mealworms and Waxworms. If you're not prepared for the daily upkeep on these, don't get one!

Celebrate World Turtle Day the pet trade perish during capture and shipping because of mistreatment and neglect.Of those who survive, thousands die each year because owners do not care http://www.hsus.org/ace/14162
Extractions: Turtles have been on the earth for 200 million years, but it wasn't until this year that they've had a day to call their own. Since many people have no idea about the dire state of most turtle populations, May 23 was designated World Turtle Day to bring attention to conservation issues and to highlight ways individuals can protect these reptiles. Declining on Land and in Water There are approximately 250 species of turtles in the world: seven sea turtle species, 180 freshwater species, and the rest land dwellers. Because of human activities, scientists believe that many species face extinction within the next few years if immediate action is not taken to protect them. The Turtle Trade Turtles are collected from the wild for many purposes: to eat, to sell in the pet trade, to use in traditional Chinese medicine, and to make products such as purses and jewelry. The turtle trade is massive and abusive. Regardless of their final destination, turtles are often treated brutally, as if they are not sentient beings. In the United States, turtles comprise approximately 95% of all reptiles exported. The majority are freshwater turtles sent to Asia, where they are used as food and for traditional medicines. The number of critically endangered freshwater species worldwide has doubled in the past five years because of the food and medicine trades.

Extractions: Home Email Join Email list Dog Adoption ... Mickey's Story Rabies PDF Download WildLife Information If you have problems with healthy wildlife living in your yard you can humanely evict them simply by using ammonia soaked rags or moth bricks in the area of which they are coming and going from!! The best method is to poke holes in the perimeter of a coffee can, then soak a rag in ammonia and lid the top so that the smell will emit from the can even on rainy days. These are not harmful or toxic to the critters, they just really do not like the odor caused by them. Please allow several days for this method to work, especially a mother with her young!! After all she needs to carry all these "kids" to a new home site. Be patient, you may even get the wonderful opportunity to see her leaving with them to her new site, course evicting her was a shame to begin with if she was not bothering any one and appeared to be healthy. If you insist on having these critters removed from your yard, and the above methods do not work, (although this is what I do to keep critters out of my garden all summer long, effectively!!) you need to contact a local pest control licensed to handle & trap wildlife. These people, and the state of Mass. refer to them as " Problem Animal Control Specialists". By calling in a specialist, Realize that their job is: to trap and destroy the critter, as they have no choice under the law, remember that Mass. law states you can not trap and relocate the animal!

Extractions: It is against the law to catch and keep wildlife. Almost all native birds and mammals in Oregon are protected by state and federal laws, and it is illegal for you to keep them. These laws exist because wild animals have special needs and it is difficult to keep them healthy and alive in captivity. For example, we had a fox pup turned in to us at the Center by a family that had kept it in capitivity for a while. Due do an inadequately nutritional diet, the fox became blind. Wild babies have Special Needs A wild baby animal cannot eat the same foods you or your pet eat. It must have special foods. Proper nutrition is essential for normal development and any deficiencies may cost the animal its life. Some animals have to be taught how to find their own food. Others must be socialized with their own kind at the right age to learn survival skills in the wild. Raising orphaned wild babies is a job for professional rehabilitators who have the training and skills necessary to provide the proper conditions for meeting the orphans' needs.
