These included 18 recognized refugees and 3,156 asylum applicants awaiting a decision at the Slovak Migration Office. During the year, 8,151 persons applied for asylum in the Slovak Republic, up more than 400 percent from the 1,556 who applied in 2000. The largest groups of asylum seekers during the year were from Afghanistan (4,315), Iraq (990), Bangladesh (429), Pakistan (176), Sierra Leone (156), and Somalia (129). Despite the significant increase in asylum applications in 2001, the Slovak Republic remains a transit country for asylum seekers traveling to Western Europe. In 2001, the authorities closed 5,247 applications because the asylum seekers left Slovak territory, presumably to travel to countries farther west.

William Fulbright Commission for educational exchange, an organization, established under the bilateral agreement between the government of the United States of America and the Slovak Republic, signed on September 22, 1994. The Fulbright Program operates on the principle of reciprocal exchange of participants, to increase cooperation and mutual understanding between the Slovak Republic and the United States. Individuals are selected on the basis of academic and professional qualifications, as well as on their willingness and ability to share ideas and experiences. The Fulbright Program adheres to the belief that excellence is found in all linguistic, ethnic, and religious groups without regardless of gender or age. Its binational Board of Directors, consisting of U.S. and Slovak representatives, controls the Commission, which among others sets priority fields for the Slovak Republic. The mandate of the Commission is explicit: to identify the best candidates in each country and engage them in reciprocal exchanges within the highest standards of the Fulbright Program. Priority fields for Slovak and U.S. applicants are defined by the need to develop certain fields that were severely distorted or were even non existent during the previous regime (American studies, environmental studies, economics and management, journalism, law and public administration etc.) The U.S. and Slovak governments jointly fund the Fulbright Program.
