Extractions: This paper is an attempt at a more systematic study of the impact of new social movements on participatory politics and citizenship at a European level. It presents the empirical findings from my work on ecological NGOs and addresses the following questions: It concludes that ecological organizations use the Internet for publicity purposes and for diffusion of information mainly, while the dimensions of discursive, interactive communication and the establishment of 'nexuses of global action' are still underplayed. Introduction Conclusions The paper presents the empirical findings from my work on ecological NGOs. It will start by giving the reasons for the choice of the category Environment amongst new social movements. This will be followed by a discussion of the relationship between environmentalism and globalization. It will continue by offering a brief account of the level of Internet development in the countries under examination before it embarks on the website analysis of various environmental organizations in Finland, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Spain and Greece. It will conclude with some thoughts about the web presence of the NGOs under inspection.

The number of case studies of particular movements in particular times and particular places is overwhelming. There are endless discussions of the free-rider problem, and extensive empirical and logical analyses of how social movements manage to deal with and overcome it. Intense debates go on in the literature over the meaning of a reflexive and identity-based politics. We have, in fact, come to know a great deal about the originating conditions, internal dynamics, boundary structures and external relationships of social movements. Some of the ideas which have been articulated through research and analysis are: the role of free spaces and social networks; the necessary translation of common situation into shared grievance; the working of interpretive frames, derived and inherent; the importance of opportunity structures and collective resources; the dynamics of embedded organization, which, once abstracted from the immediacies of everyday life, seem inevitably to suppress what they once liberated; the power of solidarity itself as incentive and social reward.
