Extractions: Your kids may be at camp. Or visiting their grandparents. Or just hanging out at the pool. But school isn't out for administrators, who are gearing up for the new term next month. And it's never out for political hopefuls who, as we move toward Election Day, are turning up the volume on their calls for higher standards in education and accountability from our schools. School districts across the country are answering the call. If your children haven't already felt the heat of the tougher classroom, they almost certainly will. Virtually all states have developed more demanding curriculum standards; many now mandate exams to demonstrate that kids are meeting those standards. How can you help your children prepare? What support will they need, emotionally and academically? "The New School Rules," Good Housekeeping's special preview for parents, looks at this latest trend in educational reform and offers practical advice everything from ways to de-stress anxious kids to the best buys in kid-friendly computers and desktop gadgets that will make the homework hours a little more cheerful read on. It's 10 P.M., and you certainly do know where your child is. She's at the dining room table anguishing over improper fractions. Or, it's the weekend, and she needs information for her report on endangered marine animals. Web sites set up specifically for kids in elementary and middle school feature answers to frequently asked questions on a variety of homework topics, including math, as well as "research collections" (similar to encyclopedia entries) on the subjects kids are likely to need to look up: history, biographies, natural sciences, sports, literature, and hundreds more. You also can find recommended links to other sites and suggestions for further research.

The Bulletin - Social Phobia In Children And Adolescents - May 2001 Doubleblind, placebo-controlled studies are few. that will help to prevent the disablingsequelae of social phobia in Arch gen Psychiatry 1997;5432936. http://www.cpa-apc.org/Publications/Archives/Bulletin/2001/May/Social2.asp
Extractions: Some of the key elements of CBT include psychoeducation, skills training including cognitive restructuring, and exposure. Psychoeducational sessions provide information about the diagnosis of social phobia and the development of the anxiety and avoidance behaviour. Skills training can include either anxiety-management techniques to help alleviate the physiological symptoms of anxiety or social-skills training. Cognitive-restructuring techniques suitable for youths help them to learn to identify their maladaptive thoughts and replace them with more realistic, positive coping thoughts. Gradual exposure to the feared social situations generally occurs over the duration of the CBT sessions. Kendall has used CBT to treat patients aged 8 to 13 years with avoidant disorder, social phobia, and generalized anxiety disorder and has compared them with wait-list control subjects. At the end of treatment, 66% of the treated children no longer had an anxiety disorder diagnosis, and these results were maintained at 1-year follow-up (9). There are few studies wherein CBT has been used exclusively to treat children and adolescents with social phobia. Albano and colleagues have adapted Heimbergs Adult Cognitive Behavioural Group Treatment Program to adolescents (10). This 16-week, group-treatment program includes psychoeducation, skills training, and exposure. After using the protocol with 5 adolescents, initial results were favourable, and a randomized clinical trial is now in progress.
