Extractions: (continued) Title IX has helped girls and women participate in interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics in far greater numbers than they had in the past. When Title IX became law, dramatic change was needed to level the playing fields of this nation's schools and to change the perception of the place of girls and women on them. Just one year before the enactment of Title IX, in 1971, a Connecticut judge was allowed by law to disallow girls from competing on a boys' high school cross country team even though there was no girls' team at the school. And that same year, fewer than 300,000 high school girls played interscholastic sports. Today, that number is 2.4 million. The rise of women's basketball is illustrative of the dramatic changes that have taken place since the enactment of Title IX. In 1972, 132,299 young girls played high school basketball. In 1994-95 the number had increased to 412,576, an increase of over 300 percent. In the last two years, women's basketball has come of age with the gold-medal victory of the American women's basketball team at the 1996 Olympics, the increased media attention to the NCAA women's basketball tournament, and the development of two professional women's basketball leagues. "Without Title IX, I'd be nowhere."

Extractions: Olympic Factsheets Women and the Olympics Women were traditionally prohibited from participating in the Ancient Olympic Games. They could not even enter the playing areas or the stadium as spectators. However, women held their own games at Olympia. Dedicated to the goddess Hera, the sister-wife of Zeus, these games grew out of traditional Greek fertility rites. According to some estimates these games even predated the exclusively male Olympic Games. At the turn of the century when the Modern Games came into being, much debate took place on the principles of women's participation. The founder of the Games Pierre de Coubertin, declared himself against women's participation expressing the opinion that if they could not play in every sport on equal terms with men they should not be allowed to take part at all. This view was opposed by several International Olympic Committee (IOC) members who supported the stand that women had the right to participate in the Games, competing in sports to suit their capabilities. The first breakthrough in women's participation took place at the second Olympics, the 1900 Paris Games. It was here that Charlotte Cooper became the first Olympic champion by winning the Gold Medal in the tennis championship. The only other sport allowed at these games for women was golf. Although swimming was added to the program in 1912, this symbolic gesture to women's sport continued until 1924 when the IOC decided to open its doors for a larger participation of women in the Games. The road between the proposal and the initiation was not an easy one as even in the Berlin Games in 1936 there were only four sports available to women, they were - swimming, fencing, athletics and gymnastics.

Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics. Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece. Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

It's just taking more work than anybody expected. Heavily favored before a three-game losing streak brought them to the brink of elimination, the Americans clinched at least a bronze today (Sunday night PDT) when Stacey Nuveman homered in the third extra inning to beat China 3-0. The deep drive gave the Americans their first extra-inning win after three losses. The homer started the crowd, led by Tom Lasorda and the U.S. baseball team, into a chant of "U-S-A!" Having avenged one of their preliminary round losses, the Americans will try to do the same against Australia. The winner plays Japan in the gold medal game.
