These grim statistics have forced the government to try to tighten the laws on gun control. But with some of the highest levels of violent crime in the world, the government has been accused of doing too little, too late. Gelusksdal school is now a gun-free zone But some campaigners who want a gun-free society have begun their own initiative to combat South Africa's dependence on guns. Teacher Mike Moses began his own crusade against guns when his pupils began bringing them into the classroom. At 16 all the students can legally own firearms. Now he has support from the small campaigning group Gun Free South Africa, and Gelusksdal Secondary School is a gun-free zone.

The report focuses on "high risk" sexual activity among the youth and makes particular reference to South Africa. HIV/AIDS awareness programmes aimed at promoting safer sex practices should come from understanding youth sexual culture, the report suggests. Moreover, the report warns that unless steps are taken to challenge socio-economic conditions which support high-risk sexual behaviour, HIV/AIDS education is not likely to make much of a difference.

In the cities, these cultures mix together in a unique and vibrant blend which is something more than the sum of its parts. Our nation is made up of people of diverse origins. Indigenous South Africans include the great Zulu and Xhosa nations who dominated the eastern parts of the country until the late 19th century, the Pondo, the Venda from the misty northern province, the Sothos from their mountain Kingdom, the Setswana, the Fingo, the Tsonga, the Pedi and MaShona and many more. These people from the north found the Khoi and the San, original inhabitants of our mountains, deserts and rocky coastlines. More recent arrivals were the Dutch colonists and Huguenot refugees from France who together formed the foundation of the Afrikaner nation, the settlers from Great Britain and all over Europe, the Malays who came as slaves to the Cape, the Indians who came as indentured sugar cane cutters almost 100 years ago, the Chinese and others. And in more recent times, migrant workers and immigrants have come from neighbouring countries and indeed the whole of Africa. They came for different reasons, stayed, struggled and eventually came to call this country home.

At the end of apartheid, the amount spent of white pupils was four times what was spent on black pupils. The teacher to student ratio was one to sixty for blacks in urban areas, one to ninety for blacks in rural areas and one to thirty, or less for whites. 41% of black students passed the secondary school final exam in the early nineties. You needed to pass this exam to go to university. 96% of white students passed, 95% of Indian students passed and 83% of Coloured students passed. The black literacy rate is less than 50%, while the white literacy rate is almost 100%. As apartheid was cancelled, more non-white students began to attend educational institutions, that were only attended by whites before. Most blacks that attend these schools are well off. Culture There are distinct cultural developments. The English culture is the dominant influence. The distinction between Afrikaners and English is diminishing, especially with young people. The Afrikaner culture is strongest in rural areas. There has been a new sense of self pride in the Coloured community. They have found expression in writing, theatre and music. Almost all cities in South Africa have public libraries. The largest is the Johannesburg Public Library, with more than 1.6 million books. The National Museum in Bloemfontein has archaeological, paleontological and anthropological connections. The Africana Museum in Johannesburg has historical and ethnological connections. There are many other museums too.
