Extractions: The Republic of Ecuador is located in the northwest corner of South America and is part of the Andes region. It is a coastal country, bordered by Colombia to the north, Peru to the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Its total area is 256,370 square kilometers after the peace agreement of October 1998, and the final frontier line was established May 13, 1999 with its neighbor Peru. The majority of Ecuador's population is mixed (mestizo) and indigenous. According to a census of March 1, 2000, Ecuador has now a total of 12,646,095 inhabitants. The name of Ecuador was officially taken after its separation of La Gran Colombia in 1830, when it became an independent republic. The name is based on the fact that through it passes the equatorial line, first known by the studies made by the Frech Geodesic Mission in coordination with Ecuadorian scientists during the Real Audiencia of Quito. Ecuadorian geography is defined by the gigantic Andes mountains which manifest themselves north to south, dividing Ecuador into three physical parts. Each part has its own particular relief and geological characteristics. These regions are: the coast or Anteandina, the highlands or Interandina, and the Amazon or Trasandina. The different geography and geology allowed definite cultures to develop with very evident and curious manifestations such as the Costeño (from the coast) the Serrano (highlands or sierra) and the Oriental (from the Amazon to the east). To this we add a fourth, the 16,917 inhabitants of the Archipelago of the Galapagos which are some 1,000 kilometers (700 miles) from the continental coast.

Now recent finds at Monte Verde in Chile make that view tenuous. However, the new discoveries are quite consistent with the Theosophical view of history. On this subject, news that can cause a pitched battle among archeologists can be greeted as only so much more confirmation from the perspective of Theosophy. The problem of the origin of the first human inhabitants of the Americas has been a problem for archeologists. In the 1930's they discovered spear-points at Clovis in New Mexico, USA and concluded that the human inhabitants of the Americas came from Asia by crossing over the Bering Straits. Evidence accumulated that seemed to substantiate this view and it became the standard knowledge. Some alledgedly human remains were found in Monte Verde, quite far south in Chile. For two decades archeologists fought acrimonious debates on the authenticity of these new finds. One problem was they were much farther south than New Mexico and some 1,300 years older. This required a significant change in view. Now these finds have been "officially" sanctioned but the problem has suddenly become much worse. Distinctly human seeming remains have been found at the same site in Chile from some 20,000 earlier. In the newspaper article below is says: Should this prove true, it would revolutionize research into one of the most intractable mysteries in American archeology: Just when were the Americas first truly a New World, and how did people get here?

One of the most hotly debated topics in archeology is the debate over when and how human being first came to the Western Hemisphere. There are three main schools of thought on the subject and several others that have their supporters. THE BEARING STRAIT LAND BRIDGE The most prevalent idea is that during the glacial periods, sea levels fell thus enabling groups of prehistoric hunters, called the Clovis Culture, to cross over from Siberia. As the hunters followed the herds of mammoths and other big game animals across the grassy plains, they entered what is now Alaska. About 12,000 years ago, when the glaciers melted, ice-free corridors opened between the glaciers enabling the animals and the hunters of the animals access to North America. From Alaska the hunters spread south until all of North and South America had been occupied by human cultural groups, later given the general name of Indians. The idea accounts for the differences in groups of Indians by saying that, as the big game animals died out, the hunters settled in defined areas and developed their distinct differences out of the isolation.

When Columbus encountered natives using the Atlatl during his voyages to the New WorldEuropeans who had long forgotten the weaponsoon became familiar with it again. These encounters were most certainly with the business end of the weapon, the European wondering, "what was that?", just before dying. The Aztecs preferred the Atlatl as a weapon of war. We get the word "Atlatl" (pronounced at-la-tal) from their language. In fact, the Atlatl and Dart were the only weapon Cortez and his Conquistadors feared because it easily piercing Spanish armor, often sending the hapless soldier to meet his Maker. If Montezuma had not mistaken Cortez for the Feathered Serpent God Quantzaquatle, history may have been very different, with the 200 or so Spanish conquistadors being only a footnote in the history of that Nation, foolish invaders who were overwhelmed by superior firepower. The Atlatl and Dart have enjoyed widespread use throughout the world. At one time or another people everywhere have used it as their main weapon for food, procurement, and war. Even today it is used by the natives of Australia, Papua New Guinea, and some tribes in South America and Northwest Mexico. But it was in North Americamore specifically in what is now the continental United Statesthat the weapon was developed to its fullest potential. Typically for our species, Native Americans tinkered and toyed with this weapon system, developing and improving the technology to such a high level of sophistication that it is impressive even by today's standards. Just as firearms have developed from muzzle-loaders to breach loaders to lever actions and automatics the Atlatl has undergone a similar evolution.
