History is accordingly concerned with humanitys ideas about itself and the social, economic, political, intellectual, aesthetic and religious institutions which it creates to give substance to its beliefs. This study of humanity in time has as its purpose to provide students with the background they need to understand themselves and their culture. The basic foundation course for the study of humanity is the freshman survey, History 101-102 (History of Civilization), and each potential major is normally expected to begin his or her study of history at Lynchburg College with this course. Those students wishing to major in history should earn at least an average grade of 2.0 in this course. History 200 should be taken no later than the second semester of the sophomore year since the skills which form the core of this course are essential to success in all upper level work in this discipline.

Juvenile justice On the cutting edge of peace carries on Quaker tradition of peacemaking For 350 years, the Religious Society of Friends has borne consistent witness against war and armed conflict. The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a modern expression of this tradition of Quaker peacemaking. As it labored to relieve suffering during and after the First World War, AFSC became convinced that its role was to "take away the occasion for war," as well as to build peace. Together with British Friends, AFSC established Quaker Centers in Berlin, Vienna, Geneva, Paris, and other European cities. The centers served as neutral meeting grounds and focal points for conferences on urgent international topics of the day. Every Quaker International Affairs role is particular to its setting, but all staff work quietly behind the scenes to help increase understanding and facilitate the resolution of conflict. They bring people together for off-the-record gatherings, exchanges, and study tours. These provide ways for people to get to know each other informally and learn about each other as human beings, rather than as faceless enemies.
