People with disabilities are victims of violent crime more often than people in the general population. However, their cases are prosecuted 14 times less often. Maryland Identifying and educating gifted students with learning disabilities Massachusetts Governor proposes closing six residential centers for people with MR In the midst of a state budget crisis, Governor Romney has proposed closing Massachusetts six residential campuses that house about 1,200 people with mental retardation. For the most part, current residents of the centers would be transferred to community-based settings. Some advocates support the proposal, citing the increased mobility and independence community living can bring. However, others are staunchly against the governors proposal, arguing some people with MR have needs that cannot be accommodated in a group home setting. Moreover, some people are concerned the government has not invested enough money into developing group homes to accommodate the large influx of newcomers. (The Boston Globe, 3/20/03).

All Departments By DIANE RADO TALLAHASSEE The Legislature launched an experiment in 1999 to give parents of disabled students the chance to put their children in private schools with taxpayer dollars. Even lawmakers opposed to vouchers voted for the program to help disabled kids get the best education possible. Now, the program is about to go well beyond the experiment stage, alarming voucher critics. The Legislature is moving forward with a bill that will make it far easier for parents of disabled students to get state money for private school, and remove caps designed to limit the size of the program. The Department of Education estimates that 3,000 to 5,000 disabled students could get vouchers next year, up from 982 students around the state this school year. Only two disabled students participated in 1999-2000, when the program began as a pilot in Sarasota County.

"People have not recognized that so many of the services provided in public schools could be reimbursed with federal Medicaid dollars," Tenenbaum says. Forty-two percent of children in South Carolina are covered by Medicaid, but school districts have not relied as much on the federal health coverage in the past because of the perplexing paperwork and because state funds were an easier alternative. With the state strapped for cash, Tenenbaum said Thursday that Elizabeth Carpentier, former state Revenue Department director, and Virgie Chambers, who worked on health issues for former Gov. Jim Hodges' office, have been hired to help districts with the complicated Medicaid process.

Upon graduation, students majoring in these areas ar e eligible for certification as special education teachers (grades K-12). The Educable Mentally Disabled program of study provides the prospective teacher with a broad knowledge of the mildly retarded and the factors which contribute to emotional and social maladjustments; offers appropriate that would enhance teaching-learn ing skills; and prepares teachers who can work effectively with mildly handicapped children/youth in varied learning environments. The Trainable Mentally Disable Curriculum provides preparation for those students who plan to work with the moderately mentally handicapped. This program provides strategies for teaching and learning that will be applicable to different age levels in a variety of educational and training settings. Methodologies, appropriate materials and sequencing of activities will be the focus of this program. The Learning Disabilities program of study provides knowledge, skills, and experiences to enable the prospective teacher to diagnose educational needs of individuals with learning problems; prepare students to deal with educational problems on the basi s of theory, relevant research and practice;and prepare students to analyze learning difficulties and utilize a variety of approaches to meet the learners' needs.

The Special Gathering Chapel Services are religious services for the mentally challenged community sponsored by local churches. For many of our members, this is in addition to their involvement in their own churches. For many of our members this becomes their church. Including all chapels, between 170 to 225 people worship weekly in a service designed for them. They also attend one of 17 instructional classes which are designed for their particular needs.
