The School of Public Healths Southeast Public Health Training Center will assess work force needs and help build development programs in six southeastern states: North and South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee. Academic institutions and public health agencies in each state will partner with the School of Public Health as part of the training center. A total of eight universities nationwide received five-year HRSA grants to "improve the nations public health system by strengthening the technical, scientific, managerial and leadership competencies and capabilities of the current and future public health work force." The training centers will help states meet the national "Healthy People 2010" objectives, work to increase the number of health practitioners in under-served areas, and help increase diversity in the health professions. The UNC-CH training center partners will first assess the training needs of public health workers in the six partner states. Priorities for educational programming will be customized by state. The training center will foster collaborative projects based on existing successful programs and will help place students in public and not-for-profit agencies for field training.
