Librarians are more than desk clerks ADVERTISEMENT Published Sun, Jan 26, 2003 Perception (heard at a dinner party): Librarians are really little more than clerks. Reality check : If this were the whole truth, I'd be proud to admit it. Clerks have preserved history and literature throughout recorded time. In fact, Jean Bottero ("Akkadian Literature: An Overview" in Civilizations of the Ancient Near East ) wrote that "the movement away from Sumerian literary traditions may also be charged to the diminishing prestige and shrinking privileges of the Akkadian scribal profession."

Extractions: 26 September 2002 By Sarah Yang, Media Relations Berkeley - A new $2.8 million federal grant will help University of California, Berkeley, researchers battle bioterrorism, infectious disease outbreaks and other emergent public health threats through a new Center for Infectious Disease Preparedness. The three-year grant, announced today (Thursday, Sept. 26), establishes UC Berkeley's School of Public Health as the site of one of four new academic centers for public health preparedness. The academic centers are funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with the Association of Schools of Public Health. UC Berkeley and the other three new centers - at the University of Michigan, University of Oklahoma and University of South Carolina - will join 15 others funded last February as part of the $2.9 billion bioterrorism initiative launched by President George W. Bush earlier this year. "The weaknesses of the nation's public health infrastructure were made clear in last year's anthrax attacks," said Dr. Arthur Reingold, professor and head of epidemiology at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health and principal investigator of the grant. "We learned that we need to improve coordination and communication throughout the public health system, from the local to the national level. These centers for public health preparedness are a major step forward in reaching that goal."

The first phase of our training was familiarizing them with the basics of using a computer. Barbara Stock Nielsen, Ed.D. state.sc.us/regional/ ISTE-recommended foundations in technology Personal and professional use of technology ... Recommendation For students to benefit fully from all they learn about information technology applications, they must have teachers who understand how to integrate those technologies into the curriculum. To accomplish this fundamental goal, a determined effort to work together by the South Carolina Department of Education, South Carolina Educational Television, all institutions of higher education, as well as schools and school districts and their business partners is essential. Professional development available at the local level to provide enhanced opportunities for information technology application is the key to success.

Teachers are provided with information to develop curriculum that incorporates media literacy while students have the opportunity to create their own messages, often working with local artists in film and video production, Web design, photography and other media art forms. Finished projects are made available through local broadcast, live presentations, media centers and resource libraries. Because library school teaches only theory, on-the-jobs skills may go undeveloped. With the introduction of computers into libraries, job descriptions have begun to reflect the importance of these necessary skills. The descriptions I found contain terms such as HTML, JAVA, UNIX, Internet searching, SuperCat, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, OCLC, SIRSI, INNOPAC, Innovative Interfaces, database management and GALILEO. These are just some of the new skills employers are now seeking. Non-library jobs and positions in special libraries increasingly require such technical skills. excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal relation skills

This is the natural history class of the future that is being developed at Clemson University with support of a $1.8 million grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and partnerships across the state. This funding is part of $80 million in grants awarded by Howard Hughes Medical Institute this week to 44 research universities. The grants, which range from $1.2 million to $2.2 million each, all address the challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly interdisciplinary undergraduate biology education. One of the challenges includes attracting students into the field.
