Standards for general education requirements are set by the College of Liberal Arts and enforced through a Senior Check system involving the student's advisor and the Dean's Office. At least 90% of all undergraduate upper-division courses in French are taught by tenure-track faculty. The quality of the undergraduate teaching faculty is under the purview of the Department Chair who sees that minimum qualifications for all faculty are met. All teaching assistants receive formal training in undergraduate instruction and complete 18 hours of graduate course work in French before being allowed to teach. All graduate assistants are required by the University to complete a mandatory training session in undergraduate instruction. It is located 10 miles west of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Marine Science Department grants B.S. degrees and offers selected graduate courses. It has over 400 undergraduate majors and 13 faculty members. Features of Particular Interest: The Marine Science Department is located in the R. SUMMARY Twenty-nine states operate a prescription drug benefit program for seniors; several states operate more than one. Most (23) provide a direct benefit, like ConnPACE, where the state pays for all or part of the cost of the prescription, typically for income-eligible people who pay an annual participation fee, co-payments, deductibles, or a combination of these. Several states have recently created price reduction programs in which they restrict the price that participants can be charged, and many states are currently investigating the potential for creating regional buying pools that will enable them to use their combined purchasing power to negotiate steep discounts from drug manufacturers. Tax credits for prescription expenses and state support for people to purchase prescription benefits in the private insurance market are other ways that states help ease the growing cost of prescription drugs for the elderly and, in some states, people with disabilities. ConnPACE was created in 1985 as a 15-month pilot program (PA 85-573). The legislative record suggests widespread support for the concept, but debate centered over whether to establish a full-scale program immediately or go more slowly. The debate also revolved around whether or not the program should cover people with disabilities, income eligibility limits, and the administering department.
