To implement the program, Commercial Space Centers primarily located at academic institutions, are currently funded by NASA and charged with developing industry partnerships to pursue specific areas of research. There are three main areas supported by Space Product Development: Biotechnology, Agribusiness, and Materials Research. The commercial product goals include improved crop development, enhanced refining processes for better fuel efficiency or casting processes that reduce waste, improved drug development, drug production rates, or drug delivery procedures, and use of advanced materials for hip or knee replacements that are more durable and less likely to be rejected by the body. The Commercial Space Centers partner with industry to help them discover the benefits that can come from microgravity research investigations done in an environment where the effects of gravity are reduced or eliminated. By making use of the unique conditions available using ground facilities, aircraft flying special trajectories, sounding rockets, the Space Shuttle, or the International Space Station, businesses are able to get the information they need to deal with problems they face today, and to develop new ideas for future development and application.
