Extractions: Venturing outside a spacecraft requires astronauts to wear spacesuits that must simultaneously protect them from the hostile space environment and allow them to perform their assigned tasks. Go for EVA! (extravehicular activity) provides hands-on experiments to help students understand the many considerations that go into designing spacesuits, and shows actual astronauts working outside the Space Shuttle. Of all the planets in our solar system, none is more fascinating than our own Earth. This lesson plan uses research done by Space Shuttle astronauts, orbiting satellites, high-altitude spacecraft, and scientific balloons to help students understand the complex systems that keep our oceans, continents, and atmosphere interacting with one another. What happens when plants grow in an environment that has neither sunlight nor gravity? Plants in Space lets students compare what happens when corn and soybean seedlings are grown on Earth vs. on the Space Shuttle. They can sprout corn seeds and record their growth, then view a video of the STS-91 mission in which astronauts did the same thing in microgravity.
