The VIL-1 antenna will play a vital role in ESA's Cluster mission by monitoring and controlling the four spacecraft and by receiving the vast amounts of data that will be returned to Earth during two years of operations. But it's a tough job with complex requirements. However, without any changes to the Global Hawk/Airs combination, the system could be used for space surveillance, boost-phase missile tracking and ground surveillance, said Garry L.
