    Extractions: Return to Industry Projects Index Chandra is a sophisticated instrument that represents a tremendous technological advance in X-ray astronomy. It is the third of NASA's great observatories. The Chandra observatory was first proposed to NASA in 1976 and funding began in 1977 when NASA's Marshall Space Flight Centre began the definition studies of the telescope. It is designed to allow scientists from around the world to obtain unprecedented X-ray images and spectra of violent, high-temperature events and objects to help foster a better understanding of the universe. By allowing the users to gaze across vast distances, the telescope should help inform scientists as to the origin of the Universe. The orbit life of the spacecraft is expected to be less than five years. During this time the perigee of the orbit will be 10,000km, and the apogee will reach 140,000km. The estimated cost of the programme is $2.5 billion. Chandra, which was launched by the Space Shuttle on 23 July 1999, was carrying the largest and heaviest load ever by a space shuttle. The satellite weighed a total of 12,930lbs at its launch. This consisted of 10lbs pressurant, 2,153lbs propellant and a further 10,560lbs for the "dry" parts. The spacecraft was more than 10m long. ENGINE AND PROPULSION The rocket uses four engines. These are in action two at a time. The fuel used is Hydrazine; the oxidiser is Nitrogen tetroxide. The satellite is powered by two solar panel arrays, three panels each. These can generate a total of 2,350W. The power is stored in three-nickel hydrogen batteries. The batteries will allow the spacecraft to function when the craft is in an eclipse. For communications, the satellite has two low gain antennas. The command link can handle 2kb/s (kilobytes/second).

The ESA sponsored 220 students last year to attend the IAF Congress held in Houston, Texas. This year up to 400 students have the opportunity to take part in the Congress on 29th September - 3rd October, 2003 in Bremen, Germany. Former Dutch astronaut and head of the ESA, Dr.Wubbo J. Still to come are a national security strategy, defense budget, and many of the technical details underlying the Administration's missile defense and modernization plans, as well as critical regional issues such as how to handle North Korea and Iraq.

And Tuesday, for the first time, it took on the rock-solid feel of reality. Boeing said it will invest up to $100 million in Teledesic, which already has the high-profile backing of cellular entrepreneur Craig McCaw and Microsoft CEO Bill Gates. (McCaw and Gates have invested about $10 million each as individuals.) More important, Boeing said it will become prime contractor for the system, which is expected to cost $9 billion. The designers have used the experience accumulated in the design of Buran space shuttle. The standard devices commonly used to measure the parameters of a stream in the pipeline cover the cross-section of the pipe. This may be acceptable for pipes with diameter of 50-100 mm. However, the diameter of the pipes for municipal heating supply may reach 150 mm and more. Heat Whirl uses the principle of a probe and is best suited for large diameter pipes. The main component of the heat meter is trapezoidal high-drag body. The circumfluent liquid forms Karman's vortex trails . These vortexes are examined with hypersonic waves and thus information on consumption of water, on its temperature and pressure is obtained.

After NMP validation of the selected technologies, future projects can use them without adding risks to their primary science or exploration missions. Pulsed Plasma Thrusters (PPTs) are electric propulsion devices which offer unique benefits to a broad range of spacecraft. A PPT was selected for demonstration on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) New Millennium mission as a step to more extensive uses on future missions. View larger image A single axis PPT was developed to demonstrate use of a PPT as a spacecraft attitude control thruster. Previous uses of PPT technology on spacecraft (in the 60's and 70's) have been for other spacecraft propulsion functions. In the EO-1 experiment, the PPT is mounted on the spacecraft to control the pitch axis, with two thrust vectors in opposing directions to provide positive and negative pitch maneuvers. The EO-1 PPT weighs approximately 5 kg and has enough propellant for 30 days of nominal operations. The experiment is planned to last a minimum of 3 days.

"The aim of the project is to expand the local base of expertise for the space industry by using Australian designed and built launch vehicles. The alliance is developing local expertise in microsatellites, which can carry remote sensing systems with valuable applications such as agricultural and mineral assessment, bush fire detection, flood warnings and vehicle tracking. With smaller sensors now being constructed, microsatellites can do tasks currently done by conventional satellites more cheaply. Some of the functions which microsatellites could be used for will include monitoring bushfires, flood warnings, and crop observation. Bushfire monitoring systems use an infra-red sensor on the satellite. This is tuned to sense the heat radiation from bushfires. An automated system could be useful for remote parts of Australia where bushfires can go undetected for days. For the flood warning system a device installed on a river bank at a remote location communicates the river level to the satellite. This is useful not only for crisis situations but can assist in long term river level management. In the case of crop observation, sensors can detect the sunlight reflected by the crops and this can help farmers work out how healthy the crop is in a particular part of the field.
