Andrew Shepp" Subject: Re: The trend of CRS in the 90s Minitels were distribured in France by the Government-owned PTT only as telephone directory replacements. One for each household, no more white pages. Well, usage grew and the Telco added private host sites (yellow pages) other than telephone directory, which are visited only by people who pay to view, and only in monochrome, block-art style (more like Teletext (consumer) or Viewdata (travel agent) in the UK than anything else, except maybe a US BBS system's ASCII "art".) Typical French product providers make more money on the split with the PTT for shopping than from markups or commissions on the actual product or service, I believe. Minitel users pay variable pricing (it appears on their phone bill) for their usage, each site sets its terms. There are amusing horror stories of sex-shopping gone mad, and multi-thousand-franc bills are often run up by obsessive users. These are often forgiven by France Telecom, although it must be embarrasing (is that a French concept?). Newer, less clunky and more reliable minitel terminals are being distributed slowly, the lowest-common-denominator aspects of supporting view/select features of the oldest models limits innovation. ** End of text from cdp:infotec.travel ** ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== Response 10 of 12 ** Written 9:58 AM Apr 16, 1996 by mendicott in cdp:infotec.travel ** Date: Tue, 16 Apr 1996 09:29:56 +0100 From: Olivier Dombey

What Is Caving ? is the recreational companion of speleology, which is every province, although themajor clubs are found and Quebec also have regional associations, but there http://www.cancaver.ca/docs/cave.htm
Extractions: What is Caving ? Ian Mckenzie, Alberta Speleological Society Cave exploring, or caving, is the recreational companion of speleology, which is the scientific study of natural caves. Caving enthusiasts call themselves "cavers", rather than "spelunkers" which is a term often used by noncavers. Although cave exploration in Canada is older than the country, organized exploration began in the 1960s when many of our caving clubs were organized. Today, cavers may be found in every province, although the major clubs are found in Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. BC and Quebec also have regional associations, but there is no national caving organization although Canadian cavers keep in touch with each other through an independent national publication, The Canadian Caver. Cavers from Canada often work together on major cave explorations, and Canadians have organized or participated in cave explorations throughout the world. Western Canada has the country's longest and deepest caves, roughly grouped into two major regions, Vancouver Island and the Rocky Mountains. Vancouver Island has the greatest number and arguably the best caves in Canada, as the climate and geology tends to produce caves that are more voluminous and better decorated than elsewhere in the country. Rockies caves tend to be cold, muddy and uncomfortable, although the longest, deepest and most challenging caves are found there. Caves elsewhere in Canada tend to be fairly small, although Quebec has one long cave and Canada's longest underwater cave is located in Ontario.

Some caves are the result of acidic water that enters fissures in limestone and dissolves the internal area over time. Archaeologists define "caves" as open areas in the earth that have an overhead ledge and ascribe the term "caverns" to the larger cave formations. Outdoor enthusiasts and vacationers alike travel to places like Mammoth Caves in Kentucky every year to explore these natural spectacles. Listed below are links to some of the most well-known caves and caverns that exist throughout the world.
