At present, the Ministry of Education, most faculties of education and most school boards encourage teachers to use the 'process writing' approach to teaching spelling and grammar. Using this method, the teacher encourages the students to express their creativity by writing freely, without worrying about correct spelling or grammar. "Conventional" (as opposed to 'inventive') spelling is gradually introduced in the context of the students' writing. Formal lessons in spelling are rare; in grammar, they are virtually non-existent. With spelling, we seem to expect that all of us should spell one hundred percent correctly, even on first drafts, and even as young children.
