This is one occasion where members can gathered together for a social event. We do hope that this could be eventually upgraded to an Annual Dinner and Dance in the years to come. Coming back to this real world. With the advancement of technology, everybody is talking about virtual office. If this is the trend, we do not really need a physical secretariat. So why not a virtual secretariat for the Society. Maybe with the launching of the Web today, the Society could now be on its way to a virtual secretariat. We would require more spiders to man the Web then just our Dr Poh Kim Leng. If you have surfed the Society's Web site, you would agree with me that it is no easy task. All volunteer spiders can approach Dr Poh direct. With this, we welcome all of you to this Members' Nite and hope you enjoy this occasion."

Extractions: Psychiatric Terms Coded for Students to Use in Answering Questions for Psychiatric Disorders and Human Development Cases Developed by Donald Fidler, M.D. - West Virginia University (Revised November 14, 2001) Note to Teachers: These codes can be used for computer "fill in the blank" exams. This is especially helpful when students are given simple or complex cases and then asked questions about diagnoses, levels of development, symptoms, and other psychological phenomena. Students can type in the codes to match their selected answers and computers can score these answers. It is usually necessary to copy and paste those sections of the answer codes onto answer sheets for students, copying only those answers that are needed for specific exams, unless the exam is a comprehensive exam that requires students to consider all of the below answers. This is a work in progress and all recommendations are welcomed. Please email Dr. Fidler at dfidler@hsc.wvu.edu Note: Do not memorize codes; these are for exam purposes only. Research Interests Of Daniel I. Rubenstein femalefemale and male-female associations from developing rules that shape multilevelsocieties where breeding I use waterstriders, crayfish, spiders and fish http://www.princeton.edu/~psych/PsychSite/ns_rubenstein.html
Extractions: My interests focus on animal behavior, especially its evolution and adaptive value. Typically, behavior that enhances an individual's survival or reproductive prospects is favored by natural selection. By using mathematical models and by collecting data from field observations or experiments I search for the general rules that govern how animals make decisions about foraging, fighting and mating strategies. In the laboratory I use fish to identify the rules underlying female choice of males and I use waterstriders, crayfish, spiders and fish to understand why in some competitive situations interactions escalate to dangerous levels involving physical aggression whereas in others they are settled peacefully via conventional display. I am also engaged in a series of experiments exploring the decision-making process individual fish use when joining groups. By varying test group size and distance we can examine how individuals make choices as to which group to join. That some species are more sensitive to small differences in group size, whereas others are not and that response time is longer in some species than others, suggests that perceptual constraints play an important role in decision-making. Coupling the mechanistic (the 'hows') with the functional or evolutionary (the 'whys') aspects of behavior is the only way to gain a complete understanding of behavior in natural settings. Armed with this multilevel understanding, a realistic foundation can then be developed for unraveling the neural bases of behavior. Using simple sensory schemes and behavioral rules I am developing spatially explicit models to explore how animals form social groups and migrate over landscapes of different structure.

Extractions: If one accepts that life on Earth has been molded by the long-term action of natural selection, it follows that the strong emotional responses of organisms evolved because they, on average, increased fitness; that is, they improved the survival and reproductive success of the individuals that expressed and acted on them. Some examples are obvious. For example, those of our ancestors who did not enjoy food and sex certainly passed fewer genes to subsequent generations than those who did enjoy and, hence seek out, food and sexual partners. Similarly, individuals who chose ecologically inferior environments in which to live should have contributed fewer genes to subsequent generations than individuals who made better habitat choices.
