BackgroundThis case involves a female who, as a result of a car accident at the age of 16, became paralyzed from the waist down. Surgery was performed nine weeks later to remove pressure from the spinal cord, but her paralysis persisted. She received her one and only Cayce reading (1535-1) in 1938 at the age of 21.

Improvements in treatment are helping many more people survive spinal cord injury. Yet most spinal cord injuries still cause lifelong disability, and continued research is critically needed. To explore new directions for research on spinal cord injury, the National Institutes of Health sponsored a scientific workshop on September 30 - October 1, 1996. The workshop, Spinal Cord Injury: Emerging Concepts, brought together experts from the field of spinal cord injury research and leaders from other fields such as development, immunology, and stroke. Current Understanding and Treatment The normal spinal cord coordinates movement and sensation in the body. It is a complex organ containing nerve cells, supporting cells, and nerve fibers to and from the brain. The spinal cord is arranged in segments, with higher segments controlling movement and sensation in upper parts of the body and lower segments controlling the lower parts of the body. The consequences of injury reflect this organization.

    Extractions: Utilization Plan for the Funds Provided to the University of California by the California Spinal Cord Injury Research Fund (Previously the Roman Reed Bill): In September 2000, Governor Gray Davis signed the Roman Reed Bill (AB750), which provides one million dollars per year over 5 years for spinal cord injury research in the State of California. These funds were allocated to the University of California (UC), and the UC Office of the President allocated the funds to the Reeve-Irvine Research Center, to develop a program for spinal cord injury research that would allow participation by faculty throughout the UC system and state of California. The first step in developing a plan was the establishment of a Scientific Steering Committee with multi-campus representation. The charge for the Steering Committee is to advise the Director in the setting of research and training priorities. The 6 initial members were appointed to staggered terms of 2-4 years. A second step was the formation of a Public Advisory Committee consisting of leaders in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to advise the director of the Center on issues and priorities having to do with spinal cord research.
