The earliest information I have is that the President in 1964 was Jim Martinelli and Herb Seitz was the editor of 'Script-O-Squares'. In 1975 the president of FLADA was Norm Moser and the FLADA Flyer editor was Irene Smith. The purpose of the FLADA Flyer and it's organization is the same today as it was back in 1975.

For one week every year, gym class turns into square-dancing class. Almost everybody hates it, except Mary, who actually knows all the steps and moves! Gossip among the popular girls has it that A Crush Come True? Mary has actually taken square-dancing lessons outside of school. What a total freak! When it comes time to divide into dancing groups, all the popular kids, including Connor and his friends, quickly huddle together. The groups form up so quickly that Mary is left standing on her own. Mr. Mathers, the boys' Coach, puts Mary in Connor's group, making everyone crack up. But Connor's big secret is that he really likes Mary and is afraid to admit it. She's really sweet, smart and shy, and there's just something about that combination that really appeals to Connor. When the dancing starts, Connor really likes having Mary as his partner, but later, when his friends tease him, he denies liking Mary. The guys buy Connor's story, but he feels terrible. He really wants to ask Mary out, but he's sure his friends would give him a hard time about it. A few weeks later, Connor finally gets up the courage to tell Mary how he feels, but it's too late. He sees her hanging out with Brad Lowry, and it's obvious they like each other. Now Connor feels miserable, and he can't even tell anybody why.

People from almost every European country arrived in America during our first 200 years. They brought with them their customs, skills, and dances. Early settlers from the eastern states and New England brought the house party and the barn dance to the Midwest. As they traveled across the country, migrating from one city to another, the different dance movements blended together. When the square dance Association of Wisconsin was founded, on the 100th anniversary of statehood, square dancing was in a strong period of growth. In the 1980's, President Reagan signed a document proclaiming the square dance as the Folk Dance of America. Because square dancing integrates and encompasses almost every ethnic culture, people the world over have come to know square dancing as "America's Dance." Square dancing has many positive elements. In addition to the fun, friendship, and feeling of physical well-being that dancers experience, square dancing offers challenge and teamwork - eight individuals all doing their part to bring the dance to a successful conclusion, each one an essential part of the square. And at the end of a tip, when the dancers join hands to bow to the others in their square, they are saying "We did it together - thanks for being there!" Square Dancing in Wisconsin is an anthology created by Aggi Thurner for the sesquicentennial celebration of Wisconsin's statehood. A project of over two years in the making, Aggi collected the thoughts and reminiscences of Wisconsin callers and dancers to provide a rich tapestry of the development and growth of square dancing in this state.
