Dumb Olympic Sports Activities that clearly aren't sports have been added to olympic competition because That'swhy we don't see rugby, golf or squash at the olympics but http://www.kidzworld.com/site/p1326.htm
Extractions: Rollerskating, ballroom dancing and water skiing could be events you see at future Olympic Games. You may also see tug-of-war, sumo wrestling and even chess. All of these are activities which the people who organize the Olympics consider to be "sports", and are thinking about adding to future Olympic competitions. Gimme a break. There are already enough lame sports at the Olympics. They don't need to add more sports; they need to get rid of some. Why do they even have fencing or shooting events? These are not sporting events, they are methods of murder. The same goes for synchronized swimming. If you have to put on make-up and get judged based on how much you smile - then it's not a sport (and it is possible to be bored to death by synchronized swimming!) What are they gonna add next? Modeling and hair styling ? I guess that way Anna Kournikova could finally say she's a winning athlete and not just some hot babe with a nice racket. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) did have enough brains to decide that bodybuilding is not a sport (it's actually defined as a circus act or a freak exhibit) - but the organization has given status to too many other activities that should really be classified as hobbies or "things I do when I'm really bored," (synchronized swimming not being one of them!)

Extractions: Amanda Smith: Yes, theyre all sports that at one time have been part of the Olympic Games, but that got the chop. Other discontinued Olympic events include live pigeon shooting, rope-climbing, an obstacle race and something called the plunge for distance, in swimming. So if youre one of those people who thinks synchronised swimming is a strange and silly thing to have in the Olympics, well, thereve been plenty of others in the past that you could put in that category as well. Now, late last week, the Programme Commission of the International Olympic Committee released a report with its recommendations for what sports it wants in, and out, of future Olympic Games, for Beijing and beyond. On the out-list: modern pentathlon, which has been in a shaky position for a while. The more surprising exclusions though are baseball, and softball. And those favoured for inclusion: golf and rugby. Theyve been recommended ahead of a long list of other Olympic aspirants, including squash, surfing, dance sport, bowling and chess.

SQUASH TO TARGET 2008 OLYMPICS FOLLOWING IOC ANNOUNCEMENT for squash to make its debut in the 2008 olympic Games, following news from the IOCExecutive Committee meeting in Lausanne on 13th December that no new sports http://www.squash.co.uk/News and results/Oct Nov/IOC.htm
Extractions: News and results SQUASH TO TARGET 2008 OLYMPICS FOLLOWING IOC ANNOUNCEMENT The World Squash Federation (WSF) will be actively campaigning for Squash to make its debut in the 2008 Olympic Games, following news from the IOC Executive Committee meeting in Lausanne on 13th December that no new sports will be added for the 2004 Games in Athens. The committee decided that Triathlon and Taekwondo, sports that were included in this year's Sydney Olympics for the first time, will be retained - but rejected any additions. Ten sports, including Squash, have been campaigning for inclusion in the Athens Olympics for over three years but there has recently been doubt that the Organising Committee in Athens could cope with any additions. The Organising Committee in Athens could cope with any additions. The IOC has also ruled that a strict maximum of 10,000 athletes will apply to the Athens Games and this will involve a reduction on the participation in Sydney. Ted Wallbutton, WSF Chief Executive, commented: "Although we have been anticipating this result for some time, it has still come as a bitter disappointment to us. We strongly believe that Squash should be on the Olympic Programme and have made great efforts for many years to convince the International Olympic Committee of our case. We have also worked very hard make a special case for Squash in 2004. "In the final analysis, the Athens Organising Committee recommended the inclusion of only Water-Skiing and even this has been rejected by the IOC. In the midst of our own crushing disappointment, we have great sympathy for The International Water Ski Federation who came so close, only to fall at the last hurdle. We will be sending a message of heartfelt sympathy to them," Wallbutton added.

Extractions: Reported 2.5.99 by Tom Barva Editor's note: Tom has put together a good website of information on the Czech squash scene. You can reach it at www.squashclub.cz . Check back here (no pun intended...) soon for more information about Squash in Czech. The Czech republic is a small country, but with a terrific sports heritage. If you are a sports fan, you will know that the Czech republic excels at a number of olympic sports, probably most famously in ice hockey. With that sports tradition, it is not surprising that the Czechs have embraced squash. The first squash court was built in Prague, in May, 1989, at the hotel Forum. Since then, over the last ten years, about 200 courts have been built. The most are in Prague, but there are courts in many towns and cities across the Czech republic. The Czech Squash Association (CASQ) was founded in 1992. It has about 1500 members. There are an estimated 40,000 total squash players in the Czech Republic. There are nine squash leagues with team from various clubs in men's A,B, and C; women's A,B, and C; and juniors A,B, and C.

Its possible inclusion, it was gathered, is sequel to approval of the sport by the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA) at the All Africa Games billed for Abuja later this year. Secretary of the Nigeria Squash Rackets Federation, Mr. Patrick Okeke, who confirmed the story, said the NSRF had also received a letter of commendation from the world governing body for including the sport in Abuja 2003. The association, the secretary added, had put everything in place to ensure that Nigeria participated well at the event with a view of stamping authority in the sport by the time of the Beijing Olympics.
