Passing through the gloomy years of electricity outages and chaos of civil war, the country seems to be close to winning over all evils of the past. "We are developing a long-term plan to cope with the power shortage and we donít want to repeat the power cuts like those of previous years," said K.K.Y.W. Perera, secretary to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Power, at the inaugural ceremony of South Asia Regional Media Partnership on Energy. Conducted by the US Energy Association (USEA) under the South Asia Regional Energy Partnership Program and funded by the US Agency for International Development, the three-day seminar focused on ways of promoting energy exchange among the nations of South Asia. "At a time when the country is heading toward achieving long lasting peace in northeast with LTTE, we will require huge energy to rebuild the war-torn country. In that situation, we have to rely on our northern neighbor to have energy," said Vasana Wickersena, deputy news editor of Daily Mirror of Sri Lanka.

Background An understanding of the chemical changes in the environment is of fundamental importance in seeking answers to the environmental consequences of chemical pollution. A symposium held in Brisbane in 1989 recommended the establishment of a regional (Asia Pacific) project to improve the understanding of the chemical make up of the environment and the relevant research and development with particular emphasis on procedures and techniques for environmental monitoring. Objectives Activities A project implementation and planning meeting with Project Advisers and Coordinators under the chairmanship of the Assistant Secretary-General was held in Thailand in December 1992. The meeting discussed progress to date on the seven project components and formulated an action program for implementation.

    Extractions: The Cholas, historically known as early as the third century B.C., emerge as imperial contenders in the ninth century to dominate the south and remain prominent for around four centuries. Significant expansion to the north is blocked by Western Chalukya dominance of the Deccan, but the Cholas conquer Sri Lanka at the turn of the millennium and seriously weaken the Shrivijaya empire in Southeast Asia. The Brihadeshvara Temple is built in Thanjavur (Tanjore) by Chola ruler Rajaraja ("king of kings"). Significantly larger and more elaborate than previous temples, the Brihadeshvara paves the way for future elaborations and expansions of temple design. South Indian temples from this period onward grow into large complexes composed of various elements, including a main temple, gateways, and subsidiary structures (such as smaller shrines, water tanks, and halls). Metal sculptures produced in the Chola kingdom are considered by art historians to be among the finest works of art in the world. Most images depict deities from the Shaiva and Vaishnava pantheons. Representations of Shiva as Nataraja or "Lord of Dance" are among the best known examples of the type.

April 11, Colombo: The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to set up a Revenue Authority in order to streamline the government's tax collection process and make it more efficient. The departments of Excise, Customs and Inland Revenue will function under the supervision of the Revenue Authority. At present, these departments now function as independent entities. It was pointed out that as a result, the government loses about 600 million rupees annually. Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting that the efficiency of the tax collection process would improve under the Revenue Authority.
