Extractions: Mem's Pizzaria NEVIS1.COM The Original "Non-Tourist-Trap" Guide To Nevis, West Indies My general rule of thumb for dining while on holiday in Nevis, is to eat as much seafood, Nevisian fare, and "local" style chicken as possible. However after a couple of weeks I REALLY get a craving for a homemade pizza! When this craving strikes, well there is only one thing to do.....off to Mem's I go. From the usual toppings for your pizza you can also order a lobster pizza that is out of this world, or my favorite choice....the "Mem's Inferno" topped with spicy scotch bonnet peppers. This will really open your eyes and clear your sinuses! Make sure to get a cold Carib beer to go with this one, soda pop just ain't going to cut it. Mem's also offer other dishes such as burgers, tropical chicken salad, and a wonderful lobster salad just to name a few. If you are an adventuresome diner, you will be sure to want to try the Goatwater on Saturdays along with rotis, and curried goat. I can personally recommend the rotis. Located in Prospect Gardens, this cozy little roadside restaurant is sure to delight. Open on Sundays and Mondays from 6:00 PM - 11:00 PM, and Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 AM - 11:00 PM. As always call ahead to verify that they are open.

Extractions: Caribbean Islands Caribbean Islands The relative stability characterizing the Westminster-style democracies of the Commonwealth Caribbean began to crumble in the late 1960s and early 1970s when Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago were shaken by political violence. Until they began achieving independence, the Commonwealth Caribbean islands had been relatively immune from subversion because of the efficient protection provided by British security and defense guarantees. The Black Power movement (see Glossary) was behind much of the social disorder, although criminal violence also rose to unprecedented levels. Black Power activists almost succeeded in overthrowing Prime Minister Williams in Trinidad and Tobago in 1970, but government troops finally suppressed the revolt with the assistance of a planeload of arms and ammunition purchased from the United States and Venezuela (see Political Dynamics, ch. 3). Another small Marxist group continued to carry out terrorist attacks on the island for a few years. The leaders of most of the Marxist-Leninist-oriented opposition groups in the region were known to have had close contact with Cuba. Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago were particularly concerned about Cuban involvement in the indigenous Black Power movement. Virtually all of the Commonwealth Caribbean islands had at least one small extremist group that was an occasional security threat.

Extractions: Source: The Library of Congress Country Studies In 1962, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago became the first Anglophone Caribbean countries to achieve independence. Barbados gained its independence in 1966; the Bahamas in 1973; Grenada in 1974; Dominica in 1978; St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1979; Antigua and Barbuda in 1981; and St. KittsNevis in 1983. In late 1987, Montserrat, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, and the Turks and Caicos Islands remained crown colonies with limited internal self-government. Anguilla, having broken away unilaterally from St. Kitts-Nevis in 1967, became an Associated State of Great Britain in 1976. The proliferation of mini-states in the Caribbean will most likely continue. The five remaining British dependencies may yet seek independence. Moreover, it is not inconceivable that one or more multiple-island states, such as St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, or even Trinidad and Tobago, might split into separate entities. Extractions: From the 17" century until 1967, Nevis, along with its sister island, St. Kitts, were governed by England as part of the colony of the Leeward Islands, and later, the West Indies Federation. In 1967, St. Kitts and Nevis along with Anguilla became a governing state with Great Britain. In that same year, Anguilla seceded from the Federation. In 1983, St. Kitts and Nevis achieved full political independence. Consequently, the Federation ceased being an Associated State and attained the status of a Sovereign and Democratic Federal State, which is an independent participant of the British Commonwealth. Under this sovereign status, Nevis has adopted the British Parliamentary System of government. It has its own unicameral legislature and government that has the authority to formulate its own economic decisions. Unlike most other English speaking Caribbean jurisdiction, Nevis is neither a dependency nor a crown colony of Britain. The Federation also has its own representation at the United Nations
Extractions: News from our Region PM Douglas of St Kitts/Nevis Proposes Compensation for Loss of Professional and Skilled Labour St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas has proposed that Caribbean countries seek some compensation in the form of reimbursement of the cost of training professionals from the recipients of skilled labour. He told a high-powered United States delegation headed by Secretary of Health and Human Services, the Hon. Tommy Thompson and Caribbean Ministers of Health, that the meeting should also consider the training of more nursing professionals and negotiating with the receiving countries and institutions the mechanisms for managing migration. Prime Minister Douglas pointed to access to better healthcare as one of the underlying causes of migration, stating that it has become essential for Caribbean countries to make every effort to improve its health care services. "This cannot be achieved if our skilled labour force is leaving, and the quality and numbers required to deliver quality healthcare are compromised. In addition, the widening technological gap is creating vast inequalities in access to 'quality' care. For this and other reasons, countries like ours in the Caribbean are at a serious disadvantage. We are therefore at further risk," said the St. Kitts and Nevis leader. Prime Minister Douglas said the vicious cycle, exacerbated by the relatively high debt burdens that many of the Caribbean countries are experiencing, justifies the consideration of a new formula which will address in a holistic manner several concerns, particularly in light of the rising incidence burden of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean Region.

" Focus on the Caribbean " will be launched at UNESCO Headquarters immediately after the conclusion of the World Conference on Higher Education. This process of consultation follows upon the mise en marche of Focus on the Pacific on 1 November 1997. The initiative is meant to provide the framework for ongoing dialogue between UNESCO and the countries of the Caribbean sub-region. These are the fourteen Member States of Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as three Associate Members: Aruba, the British Virgin Islands and The Netherlands Antilles. Regional preparations began with a meeting of Caribbean experts in St. Kitts from 6 to 8 April 1998. The meeting has identified as key to all significant human development activity in the Caribbean five components, namely: youth empowerment, community participation, the management of diversity, the fostering of creativity, and the fostering of democracy and peace. The aforementioned now form the basis for the programmes, projects and follow-up action plan that the specially appointed regional secretariat put together during its sitting in St. Kitts and Nevis, from 31 August to 4 September.
