Service Barriers St. Lucia Geography St. Lucia is one of many small land masses composing the insular group known as the Windward Islands. Unlike large limestone areas such as Florida, Cuba, and the Yucatan Peninsula, or the Bahamas, which is a small island group composed of coral and sand, St. Lucia is a typical Windward Island formation of volcanic rock that came into existence long after much of the region had already been formed. St. Lucia's physical features are strikingly beautiful. Dominated by high peaks and rain forests in the interior, the 616- square-kilometer island is known for the twin peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton on the southwestern coast, its soft sandy beaches, and its magnificent natural harbors. Mount Gimie, the highest peak, is located in the central mountain range and rises to 958 meters above sea level, a contrast that is also evident in the abrupt climatic transition from coastal to inland areas. The steep terrain also accentuates the many rivers that flow from central St. Lucia to the Caribbean. Fertile land holdings, which support banana farming, are scattered throughout the island.

Extractions: All St. Lucia beaches form part of the "Queen's Chain" and therefore are all public, even if it is in front of a hotel. Which means that you can see every beach that St. Lucia has to offer no matter where you stay. However, some hotels make access difficult, but by law there is a public path to the beach or you may reach it by boat. Because of St. Lucia's geography, there are black volcanic sandy beaches as well as mile-long white sandy stretches. There are no lifeguards here, but if the surf is too rough you may see a red flag indicating not to swim on the more popular beaches. Here's a collection of beaches that await you on your St. Lucia vacation.

Extractions: A ccording to Prime Minister Kenny Anthony, the people of St. Lucia are the island's greatest natural resource, and investing in the human resource is critical to improving the small islands economy. St. Lucia has historically relied on the agricultural sector, primarily its banana exports. However, St. Lucian banana exports made a staggering drop from about $52.4 million in 1996 to only $19.7 million in 1998. This 62 percent decline came in response to the World Trade Organization (WTO) decision to terminate the European Union's (EU) preferential treatment toward the Windward Islands' banana trade. The intent of the WTO is to liberalize international trade, and the United States backed this decision to terminate the preferential treatment that St. Lucia enjoyed. The entire community of St. Lucia feels the pains of the hurting banana industry. Anthony addressed the impact of liberalized trade and globalization on small economies in a recent speech he delivered to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Extractions: Click to enlarge St. Lucia was a stronghold of the Carib Indians, the early inhabitants of these islands. They did not surrender this island paradise easily and their culture can still be seen in the local crafts. The European colonization period was marked by squabbles between the British and the French. Both left their mark on the St. Lucian culture of today. St. Lucia declared its independence from the British Commonwealth on February 22, 1979. Top THE LAND - St. Lucia is one of the Windward Islands with a land area of about 240 square miles (27 miles long and 14 miles wide). Its dramatic topography causes St. Lucia to be frequently compared to the islands in the South Pacific. The 2000-foot tall green twin peaks of the Pitons (volcanic cones) dip down to tropical valleys and banana plantations cover the rolling green hills. The tropical vegetation gives way to beautiful wide beaches. Streams, including those fed by hot springs, are abundant. THE BEACHES - All beaches on St. Lucia are public. The best beaches are on the calmer Caribbean side. The beaches around Soufriere and the Pitons have black volcanic sand. Some of the more popular beaches are Vigie Beach, La Toc, Anse Chastanet and Reduit Beach.
