Extractions: April 11, 2003 3:26 PM The Peace Corps currently operates in the countries of Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada and Carriacou, St. Lucia, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The countries of the Eastern Caribbean face special development challenges because of their small size and vulnerability to natural disasters. They are poised on the edge of technological innovation, yet hampered by a limited economy subject to any changes in the global economy. One such example is the island of Dominica which reported a 60 percent drop in exports last year, while remaining in the top third of the United Nations Development Index. Despite these complexities, there remains a natural beauty formed from the many rugged mountains, extensive rainforests, dynamic volcanoes and lush vegetation found throughout the islands. The islands are confronted with increased unemployment, a growing presence of drug trafficking, and periodic natural disasters such as hurricanes and volcanoes. Opportunities for youth are particularly limited. Economically, the Eastern Caribbean nations are sustained primarily by single cash crops or tourism, with growth among communication and technology sectors in some areas. Peace Corps programs are focused primarily on providing job skills training and health services to youths. In collaboration with government ministries and non-governmental organizations, Peace Corps/Eastern Caribbean has also integrated within its youth program, information technology, disaster preparedness and mitigation, and HIV/AIDS education and prevention.

Extractions: Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada ... Home SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a multiparty, parliamentary democracy and a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. A prime minister, a cabinet, and a unicameral legislative assembly compose the Government. The Governor General, appointed by the British monarch, is the titular head of state, with largely ceremonial powers. During the spring, divisive general strikes were settled only because Prime Minister Sir James F. Mitchell, whose New Democratic Party (NDP) had won an unprecedented fourth term in June 1998 by a slim margin, agreed to resign, with elections to be held by March 31, 2001. On October 27, Mitchell resigned, and Arnhim Eustace, an NDP parliamentarian, replaced him. The judiciary is independent. The Royal St. Vincent Police, the only security force in the country, includes a coast guard and a small Special Services Unit (SSU) with some paramilitary training, that is often accused of using excessive force. The force is controlled by and responsive to the Government, but police continued to commit some human rights abuses.

Extractions: Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, the Windward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean, are often referred to as "The Spice Islands". The mountainous geology of this island chain between St. Vincent and Grenada has captivating natural beauty with lush tropical forests and cascading waterfalls. The area is still undeveloped and culturally rich. Many feel that the best time to sail the Grenadines is after the Christmas winds subside, from February on into the summer months when it is less windy and the swells mellow. This is not the protected cruising grounds of the popular Virgin Islands. The current is stronger for snorkeling or swimming, but the wild majesty is unsurpassed. We recommend flying into St. Vincent and out of either Union Island or Grenada to get the most of sailing the islands, but you can also return to St. Vincent and still have a wonderful week yacht vacation in the Grenadines. Here is a sample Itinerary, but remember, your captain will design a schedule with you that matches your Down Island sailing dreams. We also recommend that you plan to sail for 10 days instead of a week. You won't regret it.
