TEMPLATE II initiatives are national movements toward standardized testing and the to earn diplomasthrough ged programs share resources such as school libraries, guidance http://northernforest.org/education_theme.htm
Extractions: Education is critical to all the social, economic, and environmental challenges facing the Northern Forest. How can we develop educational programs that reflect and respond to the character, assets, and needs of the Northern Forest? How can we integrate educational programs and economic activity to provide young people with rewarding employment opportunities in Northern Forest communities? Note: The following table offers a starting point for discussion of the current reality related to education and opportunities for youth in the Northern Forest. This table is intended as a starting point only. The Exchange process will seek additional input on the current reality and continue on through desired state and action planning. NEEDS / THREATS Diseconomies of Scale: Because of the the dispersed rural population, the regions educational infrastructure suffers from diseconomies of scale. Small communities cannot afford to replicate the range of programs that reflect excellence in education and that are available in urban and suburban settings. Small rural schools have trouble supporting adequate libraries, information technology, science labs and equipment, music and art programs, interscholastic athletics, extended day services, and diverse faculty.
Duke University Undergraduate Admissions--Counselors And Parents the four years of high school or equivalent home), essays, an extracurricular activitieslist, and standardized testing. not required to present a ged or proof http://www.duke.edu/web/ug-admissions/guidance/require.htm
Extractions: Every year, about 15,000 of the world's best students apply to Duke. They come from public, private, and parochial schools, and from all points on the economic, political, and geographic spectrum. Most have graduated in the top 10% of their secondary school class. These top students are attracted to Duke for its academic challenge, stimulating campus environment, and reputation for educating men and women of influence and achievement. From those 15,000 students, Duke's Admissions Committee selects a first-year class of about 1,625 women and men. Because admission to Duke is competitive, applicants often have many questions about the application process and wonder exactly what it takes to be admitted to Duke. In assessing individual applications, the Admissions Committee considers a variety of factors, both academic and personal, for each candidate. Certainly academic ability and enthusiasm for intellectual challenges presented by Duke's curriculum are among the first factors to be considered. Beyond that, however, the Admissions Committee looks for students who will bring a variety of experiences and opinions to campus, who will be energized by ideas, and who will contribute to and benefit from the active co-curricular life here. Because there is no formula for admission to Duke, it is impossible to predict a candidate's chances of admission by looking at the academic record and test scores alone. Instead, the decision to admit a student hinges on the interplay of six main factors:

Extractions: Lauderdale County Optional School The Lauderdale County Board of Education has recently opened a new school. The Lauderdale County Optional School is a program to help students who are at least three semesters behind in regular school and are on the verge of dropping out. Students must be 16, 17, or 18 years old to participate and they must express a willingness to complete this program and earn a G.E.D.. The G.E.D. or General Education Diploma is equivalent to a regular high school diploma. This G.E.D. will allow the students to attend vocational training, become part of the work force, or even attend college. The requirements for eligibility are quite strict. If the students meet the above requirements for age and placement, they are also expected to complete a two page application and are interviewed by the principal to determine whether they are sincerely willing to participate and cooperate. While attending the Optional School , the students are held to the same discipline code as Ripley High School. Problems with discipline are handled quickly and effectively by the instructors and principal. The students were given the option to attend this school and will be sent back to the school from which they came if they can not behave. The students in the Optional School are working towards successfully completing their G.E.D.. Some of the students come to the Optional program without having passed the Tennessee Competency Test. They are required to pass this exam before they are eligible to take the G.E.D.. Therefore, the students attending are divided into 3 sections or classes: the students preparing for the G.E.D., and two sections of students initially preparing for the Competency test.

Extractions: This language was included in The Higher Education Act Amendments of 1998 (Pub. L. No. 105-244). Although these amendments, enacted in early October 1998, changed what post-secondary schools could require of home school applicants, these new requirements have only slowly reached local financial aid offices. Not wanting any institution or student to be caught uninformed,HSLDA has put together the following information for financial aid and admissions officers. Here is how it works. Once accepted by a university, a home schooled student may be eligible for financial aid or an academic scholarship. When a college receives federal funds, its financial aid and scholarship programs are subject to federal regulations. In the past, these colleges instructed that, pursuant to federal law, home schoolers must take a GED exam or an ability-to-benefit test in order to qualify for federal aid.
