The American College Testing Program (ACT) is a comprehensive, guidance-oriented service that helps colleges, high schools, and students in transition from high school to college. Students participate in the program by completing an educational/biographical questionnaire, an interest inventory, and four tests of educational development in English, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Natural Sciences. After analyzing the information obtained, ACT prepares reports for use by students, high schools, and colleges in career and college planning, admissions, and placement, and academic advising. More than 2700 colleges and universities and other agencies accept ACT scores in lieu of SAT 1 Scores. The ACT is an achievement test. Achievement tests often reward the student who works hard more than an aptitude test like the SAT 1. A well-documented, highly organized source of memorabilia covering the history of the Academy and Baton Rouge is on file. Cafeteria Under the federal lunch program, SJA students are served nutritious midday meals consisting of meat, bread, vegetable/fruit, and milk. All lunches include a full salad/fruit bar. Ice cream items are sold after lunch. Breakfast, served each morning at 6:50 a.m. and includes milk, juice and bread items. An after-school snack program, consisting of an entree item and 8 oz. fruit juice, is offered to those staying after school. More information on this program will be sent by mail. Lunch payments are due by the 10th of each month. Throughout the school year, student cafeteria balances are monitored for insufficient funds or overpayments. At the end of the school year, only balances over $25.00 are refunded. A refund form signed by the parent is required to have this refund mailed to the student's home. Students using the cafeteria are expected to move through the serving line in an orderly fashion, to speak in reasonable and courteous tones, and to leave the tables, chairs, and floor clean and orderly. Canned drinks are not allowed in the cafeteria during the lunch periods.

PSAT/NMSQT The Preliminary Scholastic Achievement Test (PSAT) is a "practice test" for the SAT I. With the same format as the SAT I, the PSAT is a useful predictor of SAT I scores. Most students' performance improves slightly by the time that they actually take the SAT I. The PSAT is not required, though it is the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Those achieving the highest scores in the country are named National Merit finalists and National Merit winners and are often eligible for scholarships. The PSAT is normally taken in the fall of either the sophomore or junior year of high school. A student can obtain the registration information from his or her school college office or guidance counselor. SAT I: Reasoning Test The SAT I: Reasoning Test is a timed (3 hour) test, which measures mathematical and verbal reasoning abilities. Most colleges and universities require it for admission. Students should take the SAT I either in the spring of junior year or fall of senior year. It is preferable to take it in the junior year, for if a student wishes to improve the score, it can be retaken in time for scores to be sent to colleges. High school guidance and college offices have forms to pre-register; it is important to observe registration dates. Extractions: Most colleges require applicants to take either the ACT or SAT. These are standardized tests that some schools used only for placement purposes, but most use as one of the indicators for admission. You should check the information you have received from the schools youre interested in to find out what tests they require and how they are used. ACT or SAT? The two tests are very different although most colleges will take the results of either one. (Cincinnati State Technical and Community College requires neither but gives its own placement test.) It is very difficult to predict on which test you will do better. At MND we recommend that you take both tests in the spring of your junior year. By that time, you will have finished a lot of the coursework tested and you will have enough time to take the test again in the fall if you want to try to improve your score. Most, not all, students score higher the second time. You could limit retakes to the one on which you do better. The ACT tests four areas: English, math, reading, and science reasoning. Calculators are not allowed during the math test. Each area is scored separately, a score ranging from 1-36. A composite score is also given. The ACT is considered an achievement test and is designed to assess what you have learned in order to determine readiness for college level work. There is no penalty for guessing on the ACT. An ACT score is necessary to be considered for the Ohio Academic Scholarship.
