His two sons were 3 and 7. Margaret had been married before but had no children. "I cried," she said, "but I was very much in love with this man and wanted to marry him." What the Saratoga couple faced was a long, painful learning curve and a major test of their relationship. The slings and arrows of being in a stepfamily can be brutal. Relationships are complex. New stepparents, ex-spouses and the children are rarely prepared for what's ahead. Dr. Don Partridge, Ph.D., president of the Institute for Family Research and Education in Pleasanton and his wife, Jenetha, led a conference for stepparents and potential stepparents on March 9 at Calvary Church in Los Gatos. Partridge and his wife have been stepparents to seven children for some 20 years.

    Extractions: Study finds incomes and relationships under greater stress in stepfamilies Although family life and circumstances in stepfamilies are very similar to those in 'first families' where children are living with both birth parents, there are significant differences, including lower average household incomes and greater signs of stress among parents. Research funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation compared the lives of men and women in their early 30s who were bringing up children in stepfamilies with their counterparts in first families. It found that polarisation between 'work rich' families where both partners had paid jobs and 'work poor' households where no one had a job was especially marked among stepfamilies. Yet in spite of including a higher proportion of dual earner households, incomes in stepfamilies were lower on average than those of their counterparts in first families. Lower incomes reflected a tendency for parents in stepfamilies (with the exception of stepmothers) to have lower status jobs associated with poorer educational qualifications. This suggested that their relative disadvantage, in economic terms, was linked to previous experiences and characteristics, rather than being part of a stepfamily. Using data from the National Child Development Study, Elsa Ferri and Kate Smith of City University found that although most parents in stepfamilies were happy in their partnerships, a larger minority reported being unhappy, compared with parents in first families. The percentage of parents in stepfamilies who said they disagreed about the way children should be brought up was also higher than among their contemporaries in first families.

In some initial research studies on stepfamilies, it was found that children in blended families, in general, are as happy and as socially and academically successful as children in biological families. Stepfamilies, however, are definitely unique. They function in a particular manner and have different strengths and problem-solving methods than biological families. The families' boundaries, roles, mythology, negotiation processes, member autonomy and family affect are different from other families'. The boundaries are more "permeable" in blended households. There are two sets of parents which may share parental authority and economic support of the children. Their affections and loyalties are shared in two households. A new set of experiences, symbols, and rituals are developed and formed in the new families to establish different psychological boundaries from the first families. One of the tasks of the stepfamilies is to define and maintain these boundaries within their new families. Stepparents, while trying not to assume the role of biological parents, share in the socialization of the children. They also share the financial and educational responsibilities with the biological parents. Since there are no specific legal and socially defined roles for the stepparents, new roles are best allowed to emerge gradually.

She says difficulty is the norm, not the exception. Couples may have baggage from a previous relationship. Children, no matter how wonderful they are, may not want a stepparent. By most accounts, it can take three to five years to start feeling like a family, so give it time — don't feel like you're a failure if it's not working out right away. You can start by bonding around small things, even something as simple as watching television together, but the important thing is to make time to do it. The stepparent and stepchild need time to do things together. Couples need time alone, too, because unlike most married people who at least got to be alone during their courtship, there's never time in this configuration with so many constituents. Don't forget that the biological parent and child also need time alone to do the things they used to enjoy doing together.

The song tells about two people who fall in love with each other after previous marriages. However, this song does not mention anything about children from previous marriages. With children, is it still "better the second time around" When children are involved, you have stepfamilies. The children may be "his," "hers," or (later) "ours." The optimistic term for this arrangement is "blended families." However, this term seems to minimize the problems that are unique to stepfamily relationships. First, the couple typically just fall in love. They do not plan for the new relationships involved. They are trapped by the myth that the stepfamily will function just like a normal, biological family. In addition, children are even more likely to believe this stepfamily myth. They are likely to feel that their relationship with the stepparent will be like the one they had with the original parent. From both sides, these mythical beliefs create unrealistic expectations in the stepfamily situation. To add to this, most adults enter stepfamily life with another false assumption — the family will quickly learn to get along together. In contrast to these myths, the stepfamily has many built-in problems. The wife's children see the new husband as a intruder. The husband's children may think that the new wife will take their father away from them. When a stepfather tries to discipline a stepchild, his wife may interpret this as a threat to a power which used to be hers alone. Also, children often resist being disciplined by the new stepparent.
