Extractions: Prior to technology used to develop and launch satellites, it was difficult for meteorologists to determine just where tropical cyclones were forming. They relied on ship and tropical island weather observations and coastal radars. The first satellite sent up by the United States to monitor weather conditions was TIROS in 1960. TIROS' capabilities are primitive compared to today's satellite technology, but it opened the door for meteorologists to understand a great deal more about tropical cyclones.

Extractions: I haven't done much with this section of my web site for a couple years, and it really shows. I just nuked most of the links from this page because they no longer work. Perhaps I will find time to add new material of my own, particularily with regard to winter storm forecasting. This is something I've gotten in to over the last couple years, basically by popular demand of many coworkers who spend a lot of time traveling. It started out as a hobby, grew to an obsession and then became something that people were actually asking for. I post all of my forecasts to the forecast at wwoc.org mailing list. If you want to subscribe, send a message to forecast-request at wwoc.org with the word subscribe all by itself in the message body. The predictions that I send to this list include the winter travel weather advisories that I sent to an internal list of people at work. Commentary and questions on the forecasts are always welcome on the mailing list. Unfortunately, acronyms and abbreviations are a huge part of being a weather geek. I created a page that gives a rundown of computer model name acronyms for models that I use and roughly what I think of each one.
