However, if you wish to pursue a more in-depth analysis of string instruments, perhaps for your class project, a unique collection of research materials is maintained here at CCRMA. The Musical Acoustics Research Library (MARL) is a collection of independent archives or libraries assembled by distinguished groups or individuals in the field of musical acoustics research. Currently, MARL is comprised of the Catgut Acoustical Society Library, the Arthur H. Benade Archive, the John Backus Archive, and the John W. Coltman Archive. The Catgut files in particular are well oriented toward string instrument acoustic research. As we will see in this and subsequent sections, most musical instruments can be analyzed in terms of three principle acoustic components: a waveguide, an output filtering system, and an energy input mechanism. The corresponding elements of a general string instrument are its strings, body, and plucking, striking, or bowing techniques, respectively. The uniform stretched string forms a one-dimensional waveguide along which mechanical waves can travel with a constant speed of propagation.

I visited the Beethoven-Haus in July of 1996, and I purchased 30 copies of the card. I carry one of them whenever I make a trip, and give it to a fellow Beethoven lover I meet. In June of 2001, I met Irina Bachkova, professor at Moscow Conservatory. She was born in Kazan and was visiting there. I was also there. Prof. Bachkokova played Beethoven's violin sonata No. 5, known as the Spring Sonata. She played exactly in the way I liked, and I gave her the postcard with my autograph. It is always a pleasure for me to communicate with people by means of art, literature, music, as well as scientific endeavors.

Extractions: In this family of instruments are many-stringed harp-like folk instruments consisting of a wooden sound box with a straight bridge, and no neck. Strings run more or less parallel to (across) the soundboard, instead of perpendicular like a harp or lyre, and can be bowed, plucked, fretted, or struck with hammers. In this family are found such instruments as the autoharp, Chromaharp, various types of zither, Marxophone, tremoloa, ukelin, guitar-o-lin, kanun, bowed, hammered and plucked psaltery (including hammered dulcimer and related instruments such as tsimbl, cembalo, cymbalom, santoor, santuri, yang chin, etc.), kantele, lap harp, etc. Ukelins , tremoloas, guitar-o-lins, and other oddball members of the zither family used to be sold door-to-door in the early 20th century. Ukelins are played with a bow (hence the "lin" part of the name) and you can also pluck individual strings near the sound hole (hence the "uke" part). When played with a bow ( a 3/4 size fiddle bow works well), bow up the side with the inverted U-shaped hooks. Deals were always cut by the salesmen, which is why they often stamped the price on the label. These instruments show up from time to time at estate auctions and in antique shops, where they can usually be purchased for under $50.
