The Dinka and Nuer live in an area about twice the size of the UK, in the band of country that stretches between Zaire in the West and Ethiopia in the East, from around the level where the White Nile is joined by the rivers Bar el Ghazal and Sobat, south to the rising land that borders Uganda and the Central African Republic. The population of southern Sudan is only about 5 million; the same as Scotland. South Sudan is a land of swamps and open savannah. The swamps of southern Sudan are the largest in the world and are formed when the waters of the White Nile and its tributaries flow down from the highlands of Ethiopia, Uganda and the Central African Republic into the low clay basin that forms much of southern Sudan. The swamps swell with the torrential rain that inundates the area between May and September, then recede gradually during the dry season. From this vast reservoir, the White Nile moves sluggishly north on its long journey up towards Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, where it is joined by the Blue Nile, on into Egypt, and eventually to the Mediterranean Sea. The swamps of southern Sudan abound with an enormous variety of birds. Indeed with its big views and huge skies, the whole area is unusually beautiful.

Emanating from Lake Victoria (3720 feet), the Nile flows through Lake Albert (2030 feet) of western Uganda, and northward through southern Sudan as the Mountain Nile to Lake No. Here several smaller tributaries join the river forming the White Nile which flows quietly through the grassy plains of central Sudan to Khartoum. The Blue Nile drains the high mountains (13,000+ feet) of Ethiopia, with the help of the Atbara River, which flows into the Nile approximately 150 miles north of Khartoum. These two rivers carry rocky debris that eventually forms the fine stone dust known to comprise the black mud of the Nile. Below (north of) Khartoum the Upper Nile Aswan (also Assuan ), forms the natural southern boundary of Egypt. Throughout its length, rocky walls, sometimes 600 to 800 feet tall, flank either side of the valley containing the Nile. This valley never exceeds five to nine miles in width throughout the Sudan but broadens past Aswan reaching widths of up to thirty-three miles. Near Gebel Silsileh, about thirty miles north of Aswan, the Sudanese sandstone gives way to limestone. The limestone forms cliffs along the Lower Nile for nearly 475 miles to the Delta The cliffs reach high, table-like plateaus that are surrounded by sand from the nearby deserts. The Libyan Desert, the northeastern part of the Sahara, borders the Nile to the west. To the east, the limestone plateau skirts the Arabian Desert which parallels high mountains further east. Primarily granite and gneiss, these mountains border the Red Sea and rise to heights of 6000 feet or more.

The major vegetation zones in Sudan are desert, semi-desert, woodland savanna :the on clay and woodland savanna on sand, woodland derived recently from the rainforest, the flood region and montane vegetation. The arid and semi-arid areas constitute more than 60% of the area of the country. The desert covers about 700,000 square kilometres, or more than one quarter of the country. The total area of the semi-desert vegetation covers about 478,000 square kilometres. The total area of low rainfall savanna on clay covers about 122,000 square kilometres. The wide variety of vegetation types in Sudan is reflected in its fauna. Out of the 13 mammalian orders in Africa, 12 can be found in Sudan. 1,931 species of birds were recorded in Sudan. Equally diversified is the fish fauna, the most significant of which are that of the Nile. The Nile is geologically old and has a distinctive "Nilotic" fauna, which includes relatively few species (24 families and 106 species). Similarly, the insect fauna of Sudan is very diversified; it is estimated that there are at least 100 species of insect pests in Sudan.

Travelers and researchers then started visiting Sudan and some wrote and documented their observations of sites and personal history of some prominent figures. Islam and Christianity are the two major religions in Sudan. Islam is the religion of the majority of the Sudanese people, followed by Christianity and then the other local creeds. Islamic Sharia and customs are the sources of legislation and non-Muslims are governed by their own laws in personal issues. The law guarantees full freedom of worshipping and equality of all religions. As regards the religious beliefs of Ingassina and Medob, they are related to the sun. Ingassina tribesmen also practice fire flames. In Nuba Mountains area, we find the "Kujur" as one of the important religious beliefs. Nuba tribes believe in one God as a supreme power for them, the Kujur is a human being with a spirit of God inside him. The Kujur is used for calling for rain and his aid is sought against disease. These beliefs are still practiced in some areas of Sudan. The Sufi sects contributed to spreading Islam all over the Sudan. They also contributed to the removal of differences based on racial, tribal and social affiliations by the bond of the path of Allah.

Most of Nubia was converted to Coptic Christianity in the 6th cent., but by the 15th cent. Islam prevailed. In 1821 the north was conquered by Egypt, but a revolt by the nationalist Mahdi in 1881 forced an Egyptian withdrawal. In the 1890s an Anglo-Egyptian force under Herbert Kitchener destroyed the theocratic Mahdist state, and in 1899 most of Sudan came under the joint rule of Egypt and Britain (with Britain exercising actual control). Independence was achieved in 1956. In 1955 the animist southerners, fearing that the new nation would be dominated by the Muslim north, began a civil war that lasted 17 years. In 1972 Pres. Muhammad Gaafar al-Nimeiry ended the war by granting the south a measure of autonomy. However, his imposition of Islamic law on the entire country in 1983 reopened the conflict, and an estimated 1.5 million have died since. Nimeiry was deposed by a military coup in 1986.
