The northern area, comprising about 30% of the country, consists of barren desert plains, the stony Nubian desert lying to the east of the River Nile and the sandier Libyan desert to the west. The River Nile cuts through these desert lands, and in many places the arid desert landscape reaches right up to its banks. In some places, a narrow fertile strip separates the river from the desert. The central region of the Sudan consists of steppes and low mountains. Near the city of Khartoum, the two main sources of the Nile River, known as the Blue and the White Nile, converge. The Blue Nile rises from Lake Tana in Ethiopia and flows across east central Sudan. The much longer White Nile has its source at Lake Victoria on the border with Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The southern region, known as the Sudd, contains vast swamps and rain forests. On its journey through this region on the way to Khartoum, the White Nile loses about 60% of its water through evaporation. Once the two headstreams converge to become the Nile proper, they are fed by many tributaries as the river flows north. There are several mountain ranges in the Sudan. In the west, the Jebel Marra is the country's highest range. Others include the Nuba Mountains near Khartoum, the Matong and Dongatona ranges in the south and the rugged Red Sea Hills to the east, which give way to a narrow coastal strip about 700 km long.

The climate is hot and dry from April to October, and pleasantly warm from November to March. The rainy season, in Khartoum is July and August. Haboobs (sand-storms) occur frequently from April to September. The Nile with a total length of some what more than 4000 miles, the longest river in the world; runs through the country from south to north. The capital, Khartoum is connected by air to practically every part of the world and all the most important airlines operate there as well as Sudan Airways. A flight of about five hours links Khartoum to Europe. It takes only two hours to reach most important points in the Middle East. Extractions: The Beja People Group Profile Geography The Beja are organized into five sub-tribes. On the Northern end in Aswan and South are the Ababda and the Bisharin. Somewhere in the middle and especially in Kassala and Port Sudan are the largest group, the Hadendowa and their smaller neighbors the Amarar. Beja Map In the extreme south are the Beni Amir. Each of these sub-tribes has some distinctive characteristics, but all identify themselves as Beja. Parts of all five sub-tribes can be found both living in towns and in the desert. Generally though, wherever they live, they are close to the bottom of the social ladder. They are usually very poor. Also, both in towns, and in the desert, the Beja are often seen as outlaws and bandits. Most Beja live in small nomadic clusters of three or four families. Their houses are oblong, and round, shaped like an American football cut in half the long way. They are made of woven palm fiber mats laid over a structure of long wooden poles, and they are well spaced to give each family their privacy. Beja houses are deliberately collapsible and portable and are the relative equivalent of a Bedouin tent. Due to the sporadic rain and thin vegetation in their world, Beja usually stay in one place as long as there is grass for their animals and then move to new areas when grazing becomes inadequate. These nomadic Beja in the desert only travel into the towns to go to the market or occasionally to look for work as day laborers. Usually, in the desert, the only work for Beja would be tending their animals, and some subsistence agriculture. However, in Northern Eritrea, around Karkebet, Beja are also mining gold.

It shares common borders with nine countries. The cultivable area is estimated to be 105 million ha, or 42% of the total area, while the cultivated land is 7.6 million ha, or 3% of the total area and 7% of the cultivable area. The population of Sudan is about 27 million (1994). The average population density is about 11/km , and the demographic growth rate is 2.8% per year. For some time, the Canadian company has been trying to divest its shares in the Sudan project mainly as a result of protests from human rights groups and shareholders who have accused it of complicity in human rights violations including ethnic cleansing in the ongoing Sudanese civil war. Yet, Ram Naik, our Minister of State for Petroleum, said that "the civil war in Sudan and protests from human rights groups" did not worry him. Sudan has endured the longest civil war on the African continent, with 40 years of intermittent fighting. More than two million people have died in the last 19 years of the new stage of the war and twice as many have been displaced, making it one of the greatest humanitarian disasters of our lifetime and one of the less, if not the least, reported.
