These changes are creating substantial challenges for students in Missouri. A rapidly changing work world and labor force; violence in homes, schools and communities; divorce; teenage suicide; substance abuse; and sexual experimentation are just a few examples of these challenges. These challenges are real and they are having substantial impact on the personal/social, career and academic development of students. A Response Comprehensive school guidance programs in Missouri, implemented by certified, professional school counselors, in collaboration with parents, teachers and administrators, are effective in assisting students to respond to these and similar challenges. The issues touched upon in these studies (in order of prevalence) include therapeutic interventions or alternative counseling strategies (21), interventions for gifted girls (10), diversity issues (9), career identity/career counseling (8), family relationships, therapy (7), adolescent issues (7), disability, motivation issues (5), mIddle childhood issues (3), young child issues (2), musical giftedness (2), early college admittants (2), and scientists (1). Conclusions 1. Although there does not seem to be evidence that the gifted are more prone to suicide, underachievement, dropping out, or delinquency, there seems to be proportionally higher incidences of perfectionism, stress and burnout. The affective issues of the gifted cannot be ignored by school counselors and teachers just because they don't show up in larger than expected numbers as problematic for chemical dependency, alcoholism, promiscuity, or truancy. Counseling for this group should be focused on prevention, a proactive role.
